I thought the Apache's ended up being just launchers, glorified fire support. The real heroes were those aircraft and troops on the ground with laser designators that had to get close enough to actually see the enemy.

I guess you could say any aircraft is glorified fire support when it is in the Air to Ground role if you wanted to say such a thing.

They were all Heroes... Dude. They all still are.

However if you think flying a helicopter at night, in total darkness, miles into enemy territory, barely skimming the ground is "Glorified fire support" Keep thinking that. INMHO it takes Balls. More than I got.

Gwad yes man. Those things use to fly over and were awesome. That 25MM cannon laid wastes. Lets face it our Military maneuver divisions kicked but. The Abrams was rocking also.

The General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger is a 30 mm hydraulically-driven seven-barrel Gatling-type cannon that is mounted on the United States Air Force's Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Enfilade and defilade are concepts in military tactics used to describe a military formation's exposure to enemy fire. A formation or position is "in enfilade" if weapons fire can be directed along its longest axis. A unit or position is "in defilade" if it uses natural or artificial obstacles to shield or conceal itself from enfilade.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defilade

AH-64's usually fired their Hellfire's from the defilade position. They didn't fly very far from home without the assistance of other aircraft, usually ones not as well armed, or armored. Those were the pilots with the balls.

Opps your right.. I did not look that up first. Should have I think I had 25mm stuck in my head from the Bradley days.

ANY pilot that would strap his butt in a high performance aircraft and fly into harms way has balls. Of that I think you would agree.

What about low-performance aircraft, like the OH-58's?

I think the OH-58 is HP from where I am sitting. Turbine powered.

It's the Hollywood version of the Bell Jet Ranger. The Army started getting wood when they saw Blue Thunder.

The Marines gets all the Army's hand-me-downs, plus have a few neat platforms of their own. Tell me, which one makes a smaller target facing head on:

DA Cobra does for sure although it has a much higher IR signature. I was saying the Kiowa was High Performance compared to Naturally Aspirated air craft. that I have flown.

Nothing like riding NOE in an old Huey in the Ft Bragg summer.

This story is all about sales. The US military and its corporate and legislative allies needs you to be afraid, verrrrry afraid, enough to turn over whatever outrageous budget-busting sum of money they say is necessary to guard against this mortal threat! For the Russians it is the same. They need to prove their hardware so they can sell it to the likes of Chavez who have more money than brains and have wet dreams about standing up to US military might!

I did 7 patrols in the Med and North Atlantic on a 640 class boomer during the Cold War and you are right about the Navy not revealing whether or not they knew the Russian sub was there. I noticed the person that wrote the article did not mention acoustic signatures from the subs prop or anything else that would lead me to believe that the writer actually had any clue as to how subs are tracked and recorded. If that so called hunter/attack was there, you can bet your @ss there was a couple of our wolfs shadowing in their baffles! My boat was actually the second sub to ever enter Kings Bay after we got tossed out of Rota. When I was there there was nothing but a bunch of Marines, a long pier, a tender and a few manatees. I think this article is propaganda for Putin or some top gear type article so they can convince some other country to buy one of these subs.
