Birth certificate for my stepchild or USC's child for Interview

Hi all,

My question is related to the interview letter (for naturalization).

3-D in the attachment says, "Certified copies of birth certificate of all your children born in the United States".

I have a stepdaughter who was born in the US, but she is not strictly my child. Do I have to bring her BC nevertheless?

My name is not listed in her BC. Thanks for your help in advance.

Maybe.

I personally would take a copy just to be on the safe side. Step-parents are entitled to obtain certified copies of their step-children's birth certificates (I just did it myself in TX), though you may be required to show proof of your marriage to the child's natural parent, depending on what state you live in.

I may or may not bring the BC with me depending on my mood of the day :whistle:

ETA: For your info, I have not legally adopted her (so she is not even my official stepdaughter) and I live in New York.

If you are married to her natural mother then you are certainly her step-father; adoption is not required.

You do not need to bring the birth certificates of your US stepchildren. That question pertains to children born to the immigrant (citizenship applicant) and their USC spouse together.

Hi Hypnos,

I'm a woman :) So I can't be a stepfather. Actually, I heard that you need to adopt the child (in NY State) to be a lawful step-parent.

So I don't have any legal rights or obligation to raise my USC's daughter (in NY State).
