When my wife and I got married two years ago no one told us how she could change her last name to mine. So when it came time to get her green card, she applied for it using her maiden name. Well, recently someone had told me that all we needed to do change her last name was to take a certified copy of our marriage license to the Social Security office to get her name changed. So, when the time comes for us to apply for the removal of conditions, will it be difficult to have her name changed on her greencard? What will we need to supply with the application? Copy of the new social security card with her new last name? new photo id? notarized same name affidavits? copy of the marriage license?

If you wait until you do ROC you can have the name changed with the application. I'm not sure if being married would require a court order to do it, but if it does it should not cost much. Hubby got the form off the internet, filed it at the courthouse (no court appearance required), got a couple of certified copies and mailed one in with his ROC paperwork with the ROC in his new name. After he received his new green card he changed his name on everything else.

Hi Jon&Lita,

I changed my name when I applied for my conditional GC, and as far as I remembered, I just put in my married name on the application form and and wrote my maiden name in the Other Name section. There wasn't any specific application to change my last name except for writing it down on my application form. I think you should be able to do this when you apply for the ROC.

I did gave them SS card with new last name, Driver license with new last name, marriage license, notarized translation of my indo birth certificate, indo passport copy. These are required to apply for the conditional green card anyways, but should be sufficient to proof that your wife + maiden name is the same as your wife + your last name.

It maybe more complicated if she needs to change her first name, so I wanted to give you a heads up that she can change her first name when she is applying for citizenship (if she chose to).

Hi angle, our marraige certificate has my wife's mainden surname. However she got her foreign passport renewed with my surname, with the intension of getting her name change to my surname.

We plan to file I-751 with the new name (with my surname) and indicating the existing name (with mainden surname) in the "Other names used section". All other documents will still have her mainden name (like Bank Accounts, SSN, Lease, Utilities, Insurance and 401K Benficiary, Medical Benefits). I think this may do but want to be sure. Sorry for including my question in this thread - please excuse me.
