Cant find work in Florida

Hi everyone,

Everything has been going great with my husband and I. I cant believe it has already been 9 months. Time does fly. I am here because my husband still has had no luck with a job, he has applied and applied, he has had only one interview. I have tried to be as supportive as I can and help him as much as I can, but in the mean time I have had to pick up more shifts to help us get by so have been really tired and unsympathetic at times. He brought some money over which has helped, I figured about a year for him to find something he will be happy doing. Some days I wish he would just get any thing so he would have to get out of the house, but with his degree he feels that would be a kick in his face. I am very worried now, I don't know how long I can keep being supportive for him until I finally say " Babe, get a job, any job." Seems I am going to be carrying the weight for a while longer, I really just want him to succeed like I know he can. I hate feeling like I have know control. Please any one that has any suggestions, or advice or encouragement. We are in Florida, if this helps.

Yes I live in Florida too and my Fiance just got approved. He'll be here soon and may have to experience the same thing.

The best encouragement I can give you is to be realistic. It's no secret that the world is facing economical issues. Maybe you can encourage your husband to accept any job in the meantime until he gets something in his Field. That may take several months or maybe a year or two. Either that or he can take some refresher courses in school and use grant money (if you're eligible) to help you guys out.

There's only so much he can do; but that he can do his best and leave the rest in God's hands. Best wishes to you as my Fiance and I will have to endure similar issues here in Florida.

There are jobs out there. While they may make him feel degraded, there is nothing degrading about good honest physically hard work, until your time comes to move up in the world. Something my dad taught me. No one is above any job that pays. Because let's face it, a job that pays is better than not getting paid at all. Tell him to get a job while he waits for an MBA type position. It won't hurt his reputation (like so many believe).

Welcome to America.

For real! Another option is come up with some entrepreneurial idea while he's flipping burgers because that's that way it is in 2012!!! Sounds like your patience is running thin. Remember the "for better or for worse part...?" Here it is!

Thanks for the posts, your opinions are appreciated. Please do not quote to me wedding vows. I am only trying to get opinion on how people who have succeeded at getting the job they wanted, instead of lowering your standards. I don't want for him to do that, when financially we have to, he will. My husband isn't gonna sit on the couch watching soap operas and eating bon bons like I have heard from past people about their situation. Lowering your standard I think does hurt you, mentally. Again I would like constructive opinion not negative nancys. Thank you to the people who have been positive about my questions an don't just say he isn't doing enough because he isn't flipping burgers.

"Lowering your standards" just goes to show the kind of attitude people have about certain types of jobs in the world. As though those jobs are beneath them but not beneath others.

I hope he finds work, no matter what his philosphy on work is. Being an out-of-work man would be difficult on the self-esteem. Good luck to him and to you.

Wedding vows?

My man will earn lots more of my respect when he attempts anything, including delivering pizzas, so he won't have a big gap in his resume rather than finding excuses why he can't find jobs.

Even when he applies for another professional job later on, he still can proudly tell the interviewer "I'd rather do something to bring the extra cash to help my family with gas money, as long as the work is honest and hard work. That's what America is about."

I formally moved a few months ago (got my ssn/green card/driver's license), but have been back in Sweden to sell our condo, ship our things and end my current employment here. I will have been gone less then six months so it shouldn't be a problem. Now that we are moving (again) in three weeks I have started looking for a job more intently. After posting my resume on monster.com I have been contacted by numerous recruiters wanting me to apply for jobs. Most of the jobs haven't been a good fit for my skills or have been a bit far from where we are going to live, but I have a company interested in interviewing me for a position paying 85-95k.

I would recommend anyone who has experience in IT to put together a good resume and make it searchable on monster. There are specific recruiting companies you could register with as well. Kforce.com is one that tends to have a lot of positions posted on monster.
