Hi fellow orlando area couple! Ok here is the skinny on disney/ universal/seaworld. You have to get in with them, they rarely hire for a high up position from the outside. But if he gets in with disney(ex) he will be exposed to the internal job boards and that is where he can get a better job. He will have to do some entry level stuff , its not a easy market. Also online job hunting is hard, they get, soooooo many resumes that most arent ever looked at. I personally believe that going into every business, insist on speaking to manager just to hand resume directly to them , so they can have a face with a name! This is a good way to stand out!

This is very great info, thank have told my husband :) Good to know there are more people going through this in our area.

Hi! Im here in Tampa and I sent you a message regarding this topic.

I replied :)

Also from Orlando, yay! :). And also in restaurant business, so I know what you mean!

I just went to Craigslist and typed "business analyst" (someone mentioned it in their post about a job in another state), and several positions popped. Have you checked that?

I agree with The Gulers - the best way to apply for a job is to talk to a manager. They may remember the person who applied instead of having tens of applications without "a face".

Good luck!

No I dont think he has checked Craigs List , i also have told him. Thank You so much!

This Journey is a constant obstacle, from beginning to now constant, We have all gone through it, Wow the things we do for love. We are going to also widin our search to different states now, as much as I don't want to because I have two children 10 and 12. Does any one know what the procedure is going to be to move out of state with kids? I just want to make sure i do it right and legal if that ends up being our only option? Suggestions.....

Hey there, I saw your post and thats exactly what am worried about when i get to my wife, but for few facts i know, You asked for this when you married your husband, it seems that you started to get annoyed allot from him being home all the time doing nothing but watching tv :)). it might need some time for you to realize its the life you signed up for and its gonna be hard at first for sure, as for him, cooking class is a great idea, some classes or any activity might change his way of spending time home, meeting people and perhaps meet people who value his skills and degree enough to help him find a better job. for me i dont think so a second that i will be hired for my degree, i know its a waste of time to consider it, any job would support my wife and kids will be right for me, set the high expectations of a stable job and perfect living for some time in future, your husband should know that you're struggling and need him to stand by your side supporting you as much as you support him, he should realize that degree might work out in his old place, but not anymore, any job could benefit him Socially and improve his skills.

Hope i didnt blab and hope you find your peace with your husband.

Thanks for the opinion, but i never said husband lays on couch watching TV all day doing nothing, He has become Mr Mom for our kids and does maintain the house, because that is the trade off for now. Do I get annoyed, sure I am his only life line here in the states. When you get here you will see how much you depend on your wife. My husband still asks me to change the channel because he hardly uses it and I am the couch potatoe when I am home lol. And yes any job will be worth it, again when you get here you will see. I know I signed up for it, and my husband brought a substantial amount of money over to help, which we still have. I am only here getting opinion on what everyone else is doing and how they did it. I love my husband more then life and if I wanted to marry a lazy person who was good for nothing I would have married past men, I wouldn't have brought my husband here from New Zealand where he was making 80k a year, and have gone through all we have which FYI he has funded all of, and supported me, my sick mother who has is passed now and my children abroad for a year and a half. Please don't make assumption that are horrible just because he hasn't found a job after being here only 9 months. When you get here I would like to here your experience after 9 months......please do not forget that for the 4 months of the nine, he was unable to work because we were waiting on his green card :) Again Thank you for the comment

Do you have sole custody or shared? That is a question that your family law attorney would be able to help answer.

We were never married, and have never gone to court except for child support, we came to visitation agreement out of court. He sees his sons every other weekend and pays child support on time. I don't want to hurt my children from not seeing their father so of course child support would be used solely for the boys to travel regularly to visit their father.

You would probably be well served to get an opinion from an attorney before making plans. Why have something like this blow up when trying to to resettle?

My husband and I were just talking about this issue in regard to one of our friends here who won't put in the effort required to find a decent job here.

Getting a job depends on hard work: making connections and 'pounding the pavement'.

When I got here I approached a private school and volunteered full time and treated it like a job. That was easy since I was on a K1 visa and couldn't work anyway. It also helped me meet people.

I worked for free for several months, then when I got my greencard they offered me a job but I got one in a different school and didn't take it. That time meant that I made good connections, have great local references and have no gaps in my resume.

Also, no job should be beneath him. Work ethic can be shown in many ways. Looking after the kids is a good way to explain that time away. But if he doesn't change his attitude it'll be hard for him to fit in and build his own life here.

All the best. He may be feeling depressed about the fact that his experience and skills are hard to transfer immediately into the job of his choice, but unless he changes his approach, the situation will remain the same.

:) It can be done!!

Malaila, I will answer your questions in a PM, but one thing I would like to point out is this my husband works in Tampa Florida on a project, while I continue to reside in our orginal location. I travel every other weekend to see him, there was a period of time that his job was in the same state as our residence but since he works on projects he travel to where the jobs are.

We have been able to do this quite well, and ROC was no problem at all.

Hi everyone,

Everything has been going great with my husband and I. I cant believe it has already been 9 months. Time does fly. I am here because my husband still has had no luck with a job, he has applied and applied, he has had only one interview. I have tried to be as supportive as I can and help him as much as I can, but in the mean time I have had to pick up more shifts to help us get by so have been really tired and unsympathetic at times. He brought some money over which has helped, I figured about a year for him to find something he will be happy doing. Some days I wish he would just get any thing so he would have to get out of the house, but with his degree he feels that would be a kick in his face. I am very worried now, I don't know how long I can keep being supportive for him until I finally say " Babe, get a job, any job." Seems I am going to be carrying the weight for a while longer, I really just want him to succeed like I know he can. I hate feeling like I have know control. Please any one that has any suggestions, or advice or encouragement. We are in Florida, if this helps.

I feel the same way too. I send him sometimes to the supermarket just for him to get out of the house

I am going to reply to you by PM, but I will also add a public reply here too, taking stuff private doesn't usually aid helping others :)

Where abouts it the Orlando area are you located? Has he reached out to any recruiters yet? Getting the resume professionally done was a good first step. The amount of time a hiring manager spends on a resume right now is so little it needs to grab them in the first few seconds. When I was hiring in Orlando I was getting about 200 resumes for some of the positions I had open.

The job situation in Orlando is pretty bad in some areas, not so bad in others. One of the reasons I asked on where you live is for commuting reasons. Tampa is not too far away and is fairing a good bit better in jobs, especially in tech roles.

Is there a prison in Orlando? These are always hiring and offer overtime and good benefits, this is not a good job, it would be just a start, once he has 6-12 months experience there he can become a case manager or move to another position. They need people to work with their internal surveillance system. Don't give up, I know how bad it can get, I am in the same situation, I decided to forget I have an MBA for now and just try and get any job available, having more types of resumes is also a good idea, I mean when I apply for a retail job I don't tell them I have an MBA( they know you will not stay there so they don't even take your resume into consideration)....he might also want to check up the car dealers shops and the ones that sell car parts and do car repairs.

With Craigslist, be careful, there are a lot of scams there, if there is no company name pass...

LOL yes we are actually near Orlando, I am going have him fill out stuff for Universal and Disney, never know might be something that pops up from there. We were talking the other night , do you think if he sends his resume to businesses that aren't advertising about hiring is a bad idea? And if not how would we go about doing that?

I stopped reading from here so I can throw my two cents in, but if this has already been addressed... then my laziness apologizes. So a lot of businesses actually hire up from within. So a lot of companies might have positions open, but they try to fill them with people they have. So if he fits a skillset even though he isn't with the company... maybe you can have some luck? Also, starting anywhere to get experience is a huge bonus. I wouldn't do the restaurant route with his background. Also, probably not the top choice... but craigslist is always a source of potential income to the right person. Good luck in your journey together
