Hi fellow orlando area couple! Ok here is the skinny on disney/ universal/seaworld. You have to get in with them, they rarely hire for a high up position from the outside. But if he gets in with disney(ex) he will be exposed to the internal job boards and that is where he can get a better job. He will have to do some entry level stuff , its not a easy market. Also online job hunting is hard, they get, soooooo many resumes that most arent ever looked at. I personally believe that going into every business, insist on speaking to manager just to hand resume directly to them , so they can have a face with a name! This is a good way to stand out!

i took whatever i got after i graduated with EE from a US School back in 2003. b/c i didn't have enough professional contact. it took me a year to get something decent. then in 2009 my business crashed due to the economy and i took whatever i got. took me about 13 months to get what i wanted. i kept my options open and relocated as needed. being out of the house helps to meet people.

Also from Orlando, yay! :). And also in restaurant business, so I know what you mean!

I just went to Craigslist and typed "business analyst" (someone mentioned it in their post about a job in another state), and several positions popped. Have you checked that?

I agree with The Gulers - the best way to apply for a job is to talk to a manager. They may remember the person who applied instead of having tens of applications without "a face".

Good luck!

Impatient - my second name :)

Orlando is a lousy place to land a professional job. It's simply not a large or diverse labor market. Tourism and restaurants are always there, but the rest are in short supply and no one is letting go of what they have. And the economy the past couple of years has only made it worse.

I enjoyed the several years that I lived there, but eventually it's time to move on if you are looking for a corporate ladder/path.

Cold calling in Orlando for the type of work he's looking for is going to be a long shot. Start thinking of other cities where you'd be interested in living and have him look there.

Yeah Boiler I know I am in the restaurant industry I work at two of them, my husband is 43 and has never waited on a person a day in his life. Even now you have to be a pretty 18 to 22 year old to get a good serving job. I hate serving table, People are cheap as heck now and days I promise, you work very hard for very little unless you bar tend which I know longer do because I want to be home with my kids. I hate both of my jobs, and the only good part about them is that at least i have a job. :(

Lifes Journey I will ask him if he has gone that route yet also thank you

Hey i understand your frustration and i think with his mechanical engineering he should find something fast, with an MBA he can still find something he needs to start slowly he cant just sky rocket to the top advice him to start of as a manager Walmart, Target, Best Buy thats a starting point or look into Cruise line which is source of jobs in Florida his MBA shld get him a slight top position. Now another solution is him going to a staffing agency they will review his resume correct it and do the ground work for him, also he can look into Pepsico, Coca cola they all hiring all the time due to the rough hours they give he is just not looking at the right holes, I live in Florida and i know and understand how things can get tough but with him having a degree its a stepping stone, i was in college first year but i had a managerial position at best buy coz i forced for it. Alot of these companies wont have time to look through his resume the computer screens it so he might not even get close to an interview best thing he can do is any time he applies for a job he needs to call thier recruiting department and try n show he is ready available asap. Good luck its hard when one person works for that long

I think that he should get any job he can to start with. If he can get one working with the public it would be great. With that he can then open up his contact circle a little more. You never know where he works who he might meet. And while doing so well the money that he does bring in helps out alot. And you never know he might want to have a career change by doing so. Its not the money you bring in but the joy of going out and earning it that counts.

But what ever happens never give up. Help yourself and God will help you !!!

I think the obvious thing, at least to me, is that there are some jobs, but OPs Husband feels that they are beneath him. The biggest thing that needs to happen is a reset and for him to understand the impact that it's having on the family. I work on a team here in California where at least 5 members are from out of state (New York, Oklahoma and Florida) and they travel home every weekend. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

PS: With a New Zealand accent I would have thought he woudl make a killing bar-tending.

My husband is not here yet, he has a degree in computer engineering. He is well aware that when he arrives that the job market is going to be very rough. He has told me many times he will work at anything, including minimum wage jobs if he has to, until he can find a job in his field. Your husband should be willing to pick up something until he find something in his field, anything, even if it's part time in a restaurant as others have suggested. It's best to be honest with him and explain to him that you are worn out and you need help. He needs to leave his ego at the door and help you out.

No he doesn't have to list all jobs on his resume, only those which would give a true picture of his skills.

Let me ell you aa story, I am presenly trying to hire people for postions that are for a job with a salary range $80,000-$125,000. A resume came across my desk, the person had under her education, working toward a masters in HR. Now, the posiion I am hiring for has nothing to do with HR. My first question was, was she trying to make a carreer change, probably not if she is still studing toward her Masters in HR. I had to pass on her resume, she wasn't even offerred a phone interview.

And what happens when it's discovered during the background check (not listing where he's worked) Won't the employer feel that he may have hid something? In my industry, every job has to be listed going back ten years...they run background checks and verify the information too.

Hi there,

Boeing is hiring quite often at this stage. I signed up to their job board a while back and get daily updates of all their jobs. They are a very diverse company, from business to engineering and all kinds of stuff in between.

At least get him to sign up to it and maybe consider moving to another city. On the other hand they also have good international jobs each now and again...

Sorry to hear about your husband's job pains. I'm sure it's a huge financial burden on you mentally. I don't think this is the time to be picky. Nowadays people aren't hiring people unless they have a job. There's actually a lawsuit pending on that very issue. I think the temp service is a great idea but whether he's never served a person or not he has a family to worry about and must do whatever it takes (legal of course). My father could fix anything had 2 degrees and was laid off his job. He ended up starting a yard business. This was in the 80's and he worked to build a clientele and him and my mom worked there butts off without ever complaining. And my father was not a yard guy at all. After a year his job relocated workers but my parents didn't give up and they definitely was not going to wait for someone to help them. They went out and made a business. After a year he was able to sale the business and make a profit and return to his old job.

Maybe your husband should look at opening his own business and becoming a consultant for an international company. Bringing together a company in his country with an American company and develop work. With an MBA it shouldn't take him anytime to write a business plan.

People have a huge misconception that America is the land of gold. People work hard in this country and even though we have a lot of wealth and glamour that all comes with a lot of work and consequences. So tell your husband to put on his big pants go out and get a paper route, Starbucks, McDonald's, etc. It's not permanent. He may find a management position with McDonald's, TacoBell, Burger King & Pizza Hut (And I know they are hiring managers). He needs the experience and could one day open his own store. The possibilities are endless but he can't go into thinking he deserve something. He has to work for it. That's the American way. Finding any job allows him to meet people and then it could lead to something else.

One more idea, go to meetup.com. They sometimes have business professional meetings in your area and this could be a network opportunity. He could also host his own and ask for other unemployed people to come together and discuss leads and support each other and come up with creative ways of finding work.

I hope this helps and good luck in your lives together.

He was also worried that if he took a job less qualified for him and applied for the jobs he wanted that it might look bad on his resume for potential employers, Do you think that is possible?

Do you think it's better than nothing? He does not have to put it on resume. We all have a lot of things we leave out :)

I'm 4 months in on the job search, no MBA but I have a very decent management/finance/accounting degree. At his point, my realization is that business skills become outdated very fast. I also KNOW from the interviews that companies understand the state of the economy perfectly and seem to appreciate candidates who go out and do 'something' instead of 'just sit at home and look for a job'. And believe me, I know sitting at home looking for a job is a full time job by itself and a very veeeery stressful at that.

Here is what keeps me going:

1. keep checking craigslist. I know lots of people who found professional jobs there.

2. check out sites like freelancer.com and vworker.com for temporary, work from home projects and extra cash.

3. GO TO AS MANY HIRING AGENCIES as he can. I was staying away from those because I thought they are more for laborers than professionals but I was WRONG. Here is my [brief] explanation of how they work.

http://www.visajourn...ing-jobs-in-ny/

4. Suggest to him to do some research on unemployment in his field and some salary research. Reality checks are painful but necessary.

5. Tailor resume to EVERY position he applies to... recruiters use their eyes or software to screen resumes very quickly (they get 100s) FOR KEY WORDS. And resumes are trashed if they don't have the keywords at first glance/read. This is probably the only way to get someone to look at your resume these days. I've discovered that shooting out the same resume to 100 jobs does not work. Spend the extra time to tailor the resume and the cover letter to the position requirements and make sure the skills they are looking for are EASY TO FIND on the resume (it takes A LONG TIME), it is worth it. 4 months in and I have over 50 versions of my resume! But at least I am getting interviews.

Good luck and keep us posted!
