Dear all. I,m the wife of a US citizen and we already have a case complete at the NVC waiting for an interview date , now I was once in the US as an exchange visitor and has a San and card issued for me. When I filed the ds230 I marked no to wanting a replacement card since I thought I already have one,, now one post drew my attention to the fact that the card says valid for work only with DHS authorization! How can I fix that? Do I go and apply for a replacement card at the ss office when I go to the US? Also could someone explain to me whether t he cr1 visa allows for work or there are steps to be done to obtain work authorization..? Thanks

Under the conditions of the CR-1 visa you will automatically become a lawful permanent resident of the USA. No further steps are needed. You will receive your greencard aproximately 30 days after arriving in the U.S.

Thanks for your reply. I think I didn't,t make myself clear. I,m asking about the social security card, I said on the ds-230 form I don,t need a replacement card upon arrival to the US as I already have one, however, now I checked my card and it says valid for work only with authorization since I was an exchange visitor before...what can I do about that?

Ohhhh....ok. You will just take your SS card to the Social security office. They will take off the restrictions of your SS card.

They will issue a new card with the same SS number, but it won't say "for work authorization only".

My wife had the same restricted card. She received an unrestricted SS card in the mail about 2-3 weeks after we arrived in the US. We did NOT apply for it, it just showed up. Otherwise your validated visa is proof of legal residency (work and travel for (1) year, read the bottom of it after it is put in your passport.

Because your wife did not already have a SS card.

Thanks a lot! Do I have to do that after I receive my green card or can be done before that? Also I,m confused, does the cr1 visa allow work immediately or will there be some permit to apply for?

Thanks a lot! I understand that, but I made the mistake of not asking for a replacement card upon arrival, so I don.t think it will be issued for me automatically

Take a new corrected page 3 and 4 of your DS230 to the interview and ask that they be used in place of what they already have. Explain why. They'll understand and do it for you. That way, your card will simply come in the mail without further action.

Yeah. She did. Because she was a K3 in 2008, did AOS, we lived in the US for a year then left, turned in the green card. We got a new CR1 and checked off on the application that she already had a card and put the number on the app and checked we were not applying for a new card. We got an unrequested and unrestricted card after we entered the US in Feb of this year.

I've been on here a lot, lot longer than you have so what you need to do is take the factual information received and not make the mistake of putting words in my mouth - sport

Because your wife did not already have a SS card.
