Before emigrating, I was a Tax Inspector in the UK.

Then there was the 6 months of enforced K1 unemployment, but after obtaining work authorization, I became a Financial Investigator with the Colorado Attorney General.

Anyone with a public sector background, please be aware that whilst Federal jobs are reserved for USC's, most State, County, and Local jobs are open to non-citizens.

Good luck!

I start my first paid job here in the states, working with children tomorrow:) however I volunteered at a local fire brigade from mid April to present....

My husband whose in the military, told me a lot that I can do during my time of wait for my permit, " my choice", so I looked into it and got through, volunteering looks great when starring off, not only that it beats staying home & loosing you're mind lol...

My search was easy, I just visited certain centres and asked the directors if they had openings, and lucky for me they did. I applied and got the job :)

It's finally my turn to post here! I am starting my first job in America on November 1st. I'll be working as a client implementation specialist for a British software company! Very Excited! :) My best piece of advice to anybody out there still looking for a job would be to find a place that values your international background. That way you won't have to start from scratch :) I was applying for receptionist positions in the beginning, but was told that I was overqualified (I am about to finish my master degree in communications.

I finally managed to land my first job. I got a senior developer job at a municipal company doing almost exactly what I had been doing previously in Sweden. Luckily I have some very rare skills that gave me a huge advantage when applying for this particular job. It took over two months from first interview to agreeing on a salary and I still have to wait for the background check to go through.

I will be making more money then I used to in Sweden (mid 80s), but the amount of vacation is ridiculous. I will definitively negotiate for more vacation time rather then higher salary when the time comes.

I completely agree with this. I'm getting a lot better feedback from large multi-national companies than smaller local companies.
