So nice to see everyone progressing!! Our numbers also both begin with MSC. No walk in for us - we were told New Orleans definitely does not allow. We just have to pray there isn't another hurricane to keep us from getting over there

Now just waiting to see if we get the dreaded RFE. We didn't have an unabridged copy of his birth certificate, BUT were able to order one expedited and got it in the mail a couple of days ago (South Africa acutally was able to get something done quickly -amazing!!!)

question - was anyone able to get their significant other on their car insurance pre-EAD/SSN? I start work soon and I'm sure my husband will be itching to have independence. We tried getting entered with the insurance company and they said no way...but surely??

Which car insurance do you guys have? The way I (and this is me) understand it, is that, depending on the state and car insurance, most of them cover the car and whoever is driving it, so no need to put your name in the insurance.I'm in IL BTW

husband (when just boyfriend) just added me as a driver with my driver's license number. no need for SSN in insurance. we are with Progressive in Ohio.

I have Safeway insurance - we just purchased a car today. I am located in MS. We came over to visit my family (my husband on a B2 visa) and got offered a job, so we have absolutely nothing here I guess that's the price you pay! We tried to get him a US drivers license (he has an "international license" and SA one), but they wouldn't give him one without a SSN, and the SS office wouldn't give him a # without an EAD. I have a family member who is our insurance broker who told me that if he gets pulled over or in an accident to say he "borrowed" the car, but not to mention we are married or he lives here. Excluding those things just doesn't make me feel comfortable. We will be moving to California after his biometrics for the job, so maybe the policy will change over there...

he should be able to drive with an international license, but you should call your state highway patrol AND BMV, to check.

But I would strongly suggest to wait until he gets a document that proofs his residence to get a license. It's just 2 months! If for anything he has an accident (even if super careful, it could be someones else fault) and is caught lying about marriage, you guys would be putting in jeopardy the whole process or end up having to get a lawyer.

Many people goes to work in bus, again, it's just 2 months! If he really really needs to move, get a scooter 49cc for $500 on craigslist, usually they don't require license because they are consider mopeds.

Is just fine to drive with an international Drivers license, that is the point of having it. Me, I've been driving with my license from Buenos Aires and I never ever had a problem.

Yuck, sorry about the RFE!

Thank you guys for your input. He has been driving a car my father loaned us and the insurance didn't have a problem accepting his license then. I just wasn't sure why/how the technicalities changed now that we have our own vehicle (according to my uncle). He doesn't have a problem not driving for awhile, but I don't know if I can drive from Mississippi to California pulling a trailer by myself, it's nice to have someone to switch places with. I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow Thanks again!

Oh! he can definitely drive pulling the trailer, even more with you in the car. The thing would be driving alone once you're in california, not even insurance-wise, but uscis-wise if he lies about his residence status in case of accident.

Just checked our online status - we also have an RFE on the way (mailed Sept 7th)

I'm sure it is about the birth certificate, at least we have it ready and waiting!

Mine is for the 485. I'm really hoping we don't have an entire list of things they need or they end up sending one for the I-130 too. I thought I was pretty thorough...I even paid $300 bucks to have a lawyer look over our paperwork...

Any idea what yours is about?

Not really...I thought I had everything correct. IF I have to guess, I will say tax returns from previous years since we only sent 2011. Just hoping we don't need a co-sponsor even tho we are way over the poverty lever for a household of 4
