PAul Ryan is a near certainty to be selected for Mit romeny's running mate.

I won't belabor the point that I was the lone speculator for Ryan in an earlier thread.

Paul ryan covers a lot of bases with two factions on the right. Cultural conservatives, fiscal conservatives.

He is one of the very few Politicians who actually put pen to paper and crafted real budget ideas, this will no doubt be highlighted in Obama ads from here to november appealing to the tax-free loaders which is at about 50% of the population now.

Paul Ryan- Good points , bad points?

How does he appeal to you as a voter?

Not as bad as most, but his budget ideas were too wimpy.

If he lets "0bama-Lite" (Romney) pussify him (to show a "unified" ticket), they risk going down in flames when it rightfully should be the opposing ticket that does.

The only, and a fruitless, hope is for a brokered convention where a REAL Presidential candidate can be chosen.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Yep, it's official now.

I can;t say I am excited about the choice... it is the boring, relatively save choice. But then, I wasn't excited about any of the GOP candidates this time around.

I was really surprised that Romney would make that bold of a choice.

Personally, I love the choice. As you said, Ryan is one of the few who will actually put ideas out there.

There are definitely problems politically. The Dems can't win an argument with Ryan on policies, he's just to smart for them. So I think the race is going to become even more negative.

By picking Ryan, he probably just lost any chance of winning the election. Ryan tried to get rid of Medicare which is very popular, especially among seniors. Romney is going to be attacked on that and it will probably cost him states he really needs to win like Florida.

Totally agree. Bad pick in my mind. Looks like 4 more years of good speeches and failed policies.

the safe choice would have been Portman. Paul Ryan is a risky choice and will probably even overshadow Romney in the campaign.

Ryan sounds better and better, the more the Obama campaign tries to define him. Get off the couch and get a job, because this train don't take no riders.

I really thought it was going to be Portman, so I'm a bit surprised. I actually think Portman would have been a riskier choice, not a safe one, so in hindsight I really shouldn't have expected a Portman pick. Given a choice, Romney will always pick the safer option.

Before today, Romney refused to discuss even the highest level details about how he planned to cut taxes for the rich, increase the military budget by magnitudes, and still balance the budget, but Ryan has a history of detailed budget plans and proposals. Those are now de facto Romney plans. Let the games begin.

I find myself torn between Ryan's fiscal prowess and Obama's gayness.

Interesting observation and a bit of déjà vu for me. (I didn't like Dole either.)

Paul Ryan, Romney’s earnest opposite

In 1996, bedeviled by conservative doubts about his tax-cutting credentials, Bob Dole named Jack Kemp -- the fervent champion of free-market economics – as his running mate. Sixteen years later, confronting lingering right-wing skepticism about his conservative pedigree, Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan – a former Kemp speechwriter – as his vice-presidential nominee.

Romney played against type in his surprise selection of the youthful seven-term Wisconsin congressman, who was considered a long-shot until the last few days. Rather than choosing a make-no-waves running mate like Ohio Senator Rob Portman or former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Romney opted for a free-market ideologue over a political man for all seasons.

...Ryan is, in many ways, the antithesis of Romney. The 42-year-old congressman from Janesville has spent virtually his entire career in the public sector or in the think tank arena. Ryan has been a consistent true believer while Romney has -- to put it charitably -- followed a zigzag course.

...what stays with me was the earnestness and policy-oriented seriousness of Ryan, even then. When I asked him about Clinton’s conduct, he avoided the fire-breathing rhetoric that was a GOP staple that year and instead said softly, "I think the wrong way to go is to go down a partisan, bitter route." What he wanted to talk about was tax cutting and Jack Kemp with a dollop of Ayn Rand thrown in. When I suggested that his election over Democrat Lydia Spottswood would be interpreted as an endorsement of the Republican impeachment strategy, he replied, "I hope it isn't written that way. I hope it's interpreted that my ideas are better than hers.”

... Ryan expressed his scorn for presidential candidates who “run on vague platitudes and generalities.” With his bold vice-presidential pick, Romney has embraced the a-choice-not-an-echo theory of presidential politics.

If nothing else, putting Paul Ryan on the ticket guarantees that the October 11 vice-presidential debate will be destination television viewing. And however the politics sort themselves out, the 2012 presidential election has suddenly become interesting as well as merely important.
