Tough Finding Jobs in NY

So here is my part. I have been in the US for a month. I started my job search before coming here. Its tough finding a job here inspite of having experience.

I have applied on all job sites, wesites of many banks and It companies yet no luck. Can anyone tell me any good recruiting agencies in NY-NJ area? How are the chances if i sign up with one and what exactly is their role considering the fact that i have experience in Banking and IT

It gets a little boring staying at home whole day. I want to start working as soon as possible

Not to scare/discourage you, but in this economy it takes, on average3-6 months to find a full time position. I can imagine it's longer for banking especially in NY. I'm in finance/accounting in PA... 4 months in and have only had 2 final interviews so far. One of which, is a no go. The other... it's been 1.5 months since the interview so I am writing it off.

I've went to several employment agencies to find out how they work. The Mergis Group is my favorite so far. Robert Half International is also great. They have offices everywhere so just find yours.

The way they work: they have direct hire department (the agency puts you in touch with positions they think you are a match for and if it works out, then company XYZ hires you as an employee of company XYZ. They also have temp/contract positions, in which case you will be employed by the agency and will be placed to work at company XYZ.

The agency SHOULD NOT be withholding any of your salary if you are hired as temp/contract. The reputable agencies will get their funding from Company XYZ where you are placed as a one time fee or something similar. If you do get hired through the agency as temp/contract, you will receive benefits (health insurance, etc) by the agency.

Hi, firstly I have an Engineering degree with MBA from India. I have worked in the Banking sector and IT. My skills are M&A, budgeting, forecasting, Business analysis etc.

My wife has been in the US for 2.5 years and until today, nothing.. She is an attorney and although cannot practice law in the US has the experience and can be useful even as a legal secretary. After she got pregnant she stop seeking...

During her process/search/resumes, etc, etc, took over a year of hard work with no real results.. a couple interview but nothing, she search and applied to different areas but since the economy was not helping, was unable to land anything..

Keep trying and don't get discourage, you are not the only one in the boat..

I do not know if you need to stay in NY for your family or for other reasons , but if you just want to find a job and save some money for the next 3-5 years before settling down somewhere I would advice you to try to find job in the Midwest or in smaller cities , the cost of living will be more affordable and your job experience might be more appreciated in these areas.

Normally how it works (I've worked for 2 well-known nationwide agencies) is the amount that you are paid, is different to the amount that the employer pays the agency.

For example, you will be hired and your agency will tell you the position pays you $10 an hour, but the employer pays $13p/h that you work to have you work for them. The agency offers insurance (which I've never taken them up on). They're not technically "keeping part of your pay" but they are paying their fee for you in hourly installments (this determines how long your "temp" period will be for, minimum).

Usually the temp period is for a set period of time, such as 3 months and after that the employer can hire you directly, so you get paid from them, not the agency. The employer can also hire you directly before the 3 months and has to pay their fee for you outright (rather than in installments), my current employer did that.

hi! im here in NY for 4 years now. my husband is a nurse. if you really want to work dont be choosy. Some companies dont recognize your education and experience. i am a graduate of AB Communication arts in my country and when i came here i ended up working as transporter from a nursing facility. it is somehow degrading for a few months. but i learned to embrace my job. because of this i have money to send to my family back home and buy all the things i wanted.

so try to apply in a job not related to your experience. you'll never know after a year you will be promoted to your dream job. goodluck!
