On the off-chance Romney doesn’t get across the finish line, a handful of ex-rivals and prominent Republicans are suddenly showing up in the states that would be first to vote in a 2016 presidential primary.

Don't be so sure of that. RandPaul is the only viable candidate, at this time, that will attempt to bring the Republicans back to their conservative roots. That is what true conservatives/Republicans want, and they appear to be gaining ground. I believe the days of the "good ol boy" Republican candidate that can win a presidential election are a thing of the past.

There aren't any exit polls but when you look at the polls close to election day, you will find that Scott Brown won because he had 2/3 support among the independents. Republicans couldn't have done it for him. Democrats didn't do it for him. The independents sent him to the US Senate. And as it stands, it's not a given that they'll send him back again this year.
