Hello All,

I am starting to look into health insurance for my wife and step-daughter - they have been here for 4 months now -

I am self-employed and my health insurance people will not consider them for coverage until they have been in the US for a year -

Does anyone have recommendations on how I should proceed with this problem - my wife will not be working so coverage through her work will not be an option -

Thanks,

Paul D

Paul, I know this has come up before for discussion - you may want to do a search and see what you find. In any event, from one of those threads I saved the following URL - don't know anything about it but may be worth checking out. Good luck! http://www.insurancequest.com/Internationa...dusa/index.html

You might wish to check with Catholic Community Charities in your area.

No you don't have to be Catholic to go there.

They have various immigrant services which are privately funded and may be able to point you in the direction of some interim health care for your wife and stepdaughter.

Find yourself another providor who will cover your family.

Paul, my kids and I moved to the US around 12 months ago. We were covered for the first three months under travel insurance. During this time I applied to Kaiser Permanente, the same insurer my self employed husband has been with forever. We had no problems at all getting covered. Which, in hindsight, is a very good thing. My daughter broke her arm and developed a traumatic spigelian hernia after falling off her bike. She needed a lengthy operation to fix the hernia. Then, I became pregnant (unplanned) which turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy that I am still undergoing very expensive treatment for. My advice, get medical coverage and FAST! I hate to think what the last 3 months could have cost us without decent medical coverage. You just never know what unexpected things are around the corner.

Hello Paul,

I have been here in the USA for about 9 months now. Like your wife I don't have a health insurance. Everytime we go to the family doctor, mu husband pays cash. My husband income isn't that big that is why I am planning to work, that is to be able to get medical benefits and other benefits.

Another thing, maybe visit a local health office as you can be adviced on what to do and they can refer you as to what health plan they can avail of..

Try to find out some resource health center, like church or other outreach centers which can provide a medical services for lesser fees.

Good luck!
