Who is allowed to ask for our greencard info?

I posted in the military info section with specifics to this, but for general purposes, who can ask me for my and my son's greencard number?

My husband's son, who I've met a handful of times is joining the navy, and apparently needs this info. I'm not sure that makes sense, as shouldn't they have access to that information just in the background check? They didn't ask for our social security card numbers but I'm just a little hesitant to give out some information that maybe I shouldn't??

Your husband's son is taking an oath to defend the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic. He's filling forms requiring him to disclose such information for a security check. It's the same Government(Homeland Security & State Department) that gave you the green card, but a different agency (Department of Defense) asking for the number. I understand your concern, but don't be worried about that.

I understand if it was the government or military asking for it, but it wasn't, it was my son in law. Are we allowed to give the number out??? Can't people use it for fraudulent means if we do?

But isn't it the son in law asking for it because he needs to give it to the navy? That's how i read your post. If he just wants it to have then, no, but if the navy needs it, ask him to give you the form so you can fill it out and see that there is an official need for it.

I just completed a high level security Clearance here in the USA--I had to list all Foreign people I associate with--Which includes my Canadian friends and families--Didnt have to include anything else than their name, address, phone #, Occupation and email if I knew it. Had to list my USA family members as well, and it did not require their SSN.
