Can I give the Navy my Greencard number for my husband's son?

My husband's son, is joining the navy, and I guess he needs to put down my information on his application, even though I've only met him a handful of times. They want my greencard number and my date of birth and the same for my son. I'm extremely uncomfortable with giving that information out without knowing if I am even allowed to, I do know well enough not to give out my social security number, but who can ask for our greencard info?

Enlisting in the military is an elaborate paperwork. It is required that your enlisting son discloses your status and "A" number and stuff. So don't be alarmed. Some sensitive military jobs require security clearance, so it's normal. Speak with the Navy Recruiter doing your son's paperwork to allay any fears. Good luck to your son in serving our country.

Thanks, I phoned the recruiting officer near me and he said that they don't need any of my info, but then the one from where he is recruiting called and asked for it, but after talking to him for a while said he didn't really need to have me on his form at all and they'd just do without it. Depends on what his job is and what security clearance he will need. I say your giving it to the US government so what the heck, they gave it to you. Not like your giving it to someone on the phone. But seriously, for something like a top secret clearance it is not unusual for them to do extensive background checks of the entire family, visit the family, interview the neighbors, etc.

He's applying for basic training, and was asking me to give it to him over the phone, yes. Had a uniformed officer asked me for it, I think I would have been more inclined to share, but a 20 year old that I barely know, when I've been told by a recruitment officer that they don't need it? I'll wait till I get a summons!

It's your husbands son! You are acting like he's a stranger. The military needs very often all kind of background information about anybody in the family. Wait until he needs his clearance, they'll check your background too. It's needed and you will have to roll with it if you want him to keep his job!
