My wife is sponsoring her mom (Vietnamese citizen) to get a green card. The application was approved on 7/16/12 and NVC received it on 7/20/12, but no case number yet. I have been calling them daily... Does anyone know if it is worthwhile to escalate to a supervisor? I saw that in a post but can't find it now... or was that an old recommendation that doesn't apply anymore?

Also, we are trying to prepare all the documents that will be required... the Vietnam consulate mentions needing a police background check, but we have a cousin that went through a similar process (sponsored by sister) and didn't have to provide one. Curious if the rules are subjective...

Thanks in advance,

Ezra

It's currently taking one month from NOA2 to case number being assigned. It the petitioner was approved on 7/16, then a case number should be assigned in the next week or two. Just keep calling every day and asking.

Since they're going through the IR-5 visa, yes, a police certificate is needed. Each visa has its own requirements.

Thanks! And thank you for your great guide! FYI we just got our case number today - unfortunately I didn't have my mother in law's b-day handy and they put be back in the queue. on hold right now, but excited to move forward!

Thanks,

Ezra

Yay, grats on getting the case number!

Don't forget to get the Invoice Identification Number (aka IIN here on VJ). And make sure you give over the petitioner and beneficiary's email addresses. This is very important!!
