Confused about Medical

Hi there. I'm a bit confused about when to get the medical done. On the United States Consulate of Sydney Medical Examination Instructions it says the following

"There are no authorized panel physicians to conduct medical examinations for visa applicants in

South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT; therefore, it is recommended that visa applicants from

these states make an afternoon medical appointment with a Sydney panel physician on the same

day of their visa appointment".

I live in the ACT, so therefore will have to travel to Sydney to have the medical done, however above that in the instructions it says

"You must bring the medical examination results with you to your formal visa interview", however it also says that the results of the medical exam can take up to 2 weeks.

Pretty unclear instructions....

Could anyone who has been through the Sydney Consulate (applying for a K-1) please help me. What did you do?

At this stage we have received our NOA2 and waiting for the next step, when am I able to get my medical done?

Also, does the Doctor do the X Rays at your appointment or refer you to an Imaging Centre?

Thanks so much for your help!

From my experience, I dealt with the dr's in Brisbane, you have to wait until you are sent your packet 3 from the embassy before you can make your appointment. But I suggest that you call the dr that you plan to visit to see if they will let you go earlier. I assume not though since there is a specific case number assigned to you by the Consulate that is different to the USCIS number.

In regard to the X-Rays, I was sent to a different place to get mine done, but it was done on the same day as the medical. A urine sample was also taken for testing as well. It took over a week for the result to get to me. As I did not live in Brisbane and was unable to pick up the results personally and it cost me extra for them to be posted.

Remember that this was all done at the Brisbane dr's and I do suggest you call the Sydney pyshican to see what they do.

Thank You. I will have to call the Doctor in Sydney and see if I can get any advice. Crazy that Canberra, the so called Capital of Australia, where we have all the Embassies, requires we go to Sydney for our Medical and Visa Interview....Uugh, driving in Sydney is scary!!

Did you have to have all the vaccinations listed on the travel.state.gov site?

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis B

Influenza

Influenza type b (Hib)

Measles

Meningococcal

Mumps

Pneumococcal

Pertussis

Polio

Rotavirus

Rubella

Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids

Varicella

Some panel physicians will allow you to do the medical before having your NVC case number. How long has it been since you got your NOA2? If it has been a couple of weeks, I would start calling the NVC to see if a number has been assigned yet.

The reason they suggest that you schedule the medical the same day as the interview is to cut down your travelling, if there are no panel physicians in your home state. You are correct that it will take a couple of weeks (maybe less, I had mine in a week) to get the results. If you have your interview the same day, they will conditionally approve you, pending them receiving the medical results.

So you really have two options - you can either do the medical ahead of the interview (if the distance/cost of travel isn't too much of a concern to you), or you could try and schedule your appointment for the day of your interview, and then wait to get full approval after the Consulate receives the results.

About the x-rays - the doctor will have a radiology office that they will send you to - quite often it is in the same building, and yes it will be done the same day.

Vaccinations - no, you don't need all of the vaccinations listed - you only need the ones that are age appropriate for you. You don't have an vaccination records (it's ok if you don't, I didn't either)?

If not, again you have two options - you can either have all the required vaccinations again, or if you know you have had them, but don't have the records, then you could get a blood titre done to show immunity. Keep in mind with option two - even if you had all your childhood vaccinations, you may no longer be immune to anything, in which case you will have to have those shots again anyway.

In GENERAL - for most people going through this process ( ie aged 18 - 64), you will need :

* MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

* Varicella (Chicken pox, if no history of having had chicken pox)

* Tdap ( adults are usually given what is called 'Boostrix' - Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis (whooping cough)).

* Flu shot IF FLU SEASON

Hope this helps

My husband also lives in the ACT, and we wonder about this too! Canberra, y yu no have medical examiner?

Things may be different for K-1s, we're getting a CR-1, but I can tell you his experience dealing with the Sydney examiner so far. There are two listed, I think, and I don't know which one he is seeing. He was able to call and get the appointment before we had our interview scheduled--he said they didn't ask him for a case number or anything when he called. He is supposed to bring an envelope they will use to send him his results. When we got our interview date, he called the doctor's office to check and see if he would have enough time to get his results; they assured him that he would have his results in time (our interview date is three weeks after his appointment date).

He did have the blood titre test, and is getting the necessary shots this week. I think he said he was getting the varicella, flu, hep and tetanus shots. He is doing all this at his regular GP to save a bit of money.

Good luck to you!

Thank You to everyone for your help. I will call the Physician in Sydney and see how soon I can book our Medical Exams, hopefully I can travel up to Sydney and have them done as soon as I receive our case number. We got our NOA2 on the 3rd of August, so hopefully the case number soon. Can't believe we got our NOA2 so quickly, 86 days, hopefully everything else will move quickly and smoothly too.

Best wishes to everyone else playing the waiting game, hopefully we will all finally be with our other halves and enjoying our lives together!!

Hey!

Book your medical exam ASAP in Sydney with Dr. Waks - the sooner you get it done the better (I don't know what their wait times are like as I was still in the US visiting my fiancé when I booked in mine.) I just had my medical exam in Sydney this Tuesday.

A bit of info about booking it in:

When I first called to book in my medical, I spoke to the reception lady and she asked for my Case Number - I told her that I was yet to receive it, but I would have it by the time I had my medical exam (which is true - I called the NVC exactly a week after I got our NOA2 in the mail and got it then.) I'd go ahead and book in your appointment ASAP (I had mine with Dr Wak's and he was lovely).

A few things to make it easier for you for your medical exam - the best way to get there is by Train. Get off at Wynyard train station and walk through the tunnel to George St, the "George Street Medical Centre" is exactly across the road! Also, you do need to walk 5 minutes to the x-ray place which is called "Castlereagh Imaging" but Dr. Waks will first do your physical examination then either take you to Pathology first for your blood test (which is in the same building) then give you directions on paper to get you to Castlereagh Imaging.. I found the directions easy enough and my x-ray results were printed off in about 5mins after having it done, then all you need to do is walk back over to George St Medical and speak to Reception who will tell Dr. Waks you're back with your results, he looked quickly at my x-ray told me all was good and I was fine to leave.

That's pretty much it, nothing invasive at all, and you need to bring along a Express Post envelope, they know exactly where to mail it off to.. so hopefully the consulate will receive all my results in the next few days.. I've also sent off my Packet 3 on Tuesday so I hope most of it is all received together.

Also, once you book your medical exam you will get the following instructions via email, the sooner you can get it all together the better.. this is an exact copy from the email you will get from them:

Dear

In order to complete your Visa Medical Examination in a timely manner, please send us the following information either by email or fax with a copy of your passport /drivers licence(for Non Immigrant Visa) as soon as possible.

PLEASE RECONFIRM YOUR MEDICAL APPOINTMENT BY TELEPHONE (9247 4653 or 9239 1677) 2 WORKING DAYS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT, OR ELSE IT WILL BE CANCELLED.

1. Your case number(s)

2. Type of Visa requested (Immigrant, or Non-Immigrant)

3. Home address (postal address as well, if different)

4. Telephone number (two numbers if possible), and email address

5. Have you ever lived overseas for more than 12 months(This includes being born overseas)? Which country(ies)?

6. Have you contacted the US Consulate in Sydney, or are you in touch with the Consulate in another city (if so, which city?)

_____________________________________________________________________

On the day of your medical examination, you will need to bring the following:

1. Current (valid) passport (or drivers licence for DUI applicants)

2. 3 passport size photos with your signature on the back (only 1 photo for children under age 15)

3. Spectacles/reading glasses/contact lenses if used

4. Immunisation record including DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), or results of blood tests: proof of immunity against MMR (Measles, Mumps,Rubella) if born in 1957 or later, Chicken pox (Varicella) . If you are unable to show proof, or the test results are negative for immunity, you may need to be vaccinated during the Visa Medical Examination visit and extra costs will be incurred. During winter season (Apr to Oct) flu vaccine is compulsory. If you already had it this year, please bring doctor's certificate for it. Otherwise, Dr Waks or Dr Rappaport will give it to you during your visit.

5. Child’s Immunisation Health Record (‘Blue Book’ in NSW) for children.

6. Fees (We accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards)

7. A4 size Express Post Envelope (please purchase at any Australia Post)

If you are unable to provide the documents on the day of your Medical Examination, you may be asked to re-book your Medical Examination and incur cancellation charges.

If you are unsure of what to bring, please contact us by telephone on 02 9239 1677 (Dr Waks), and 02 9247 4653 (Dr Rappaport)

Sincerely,

About Immunisations:

If you can't find your childhood immunisation records, contact your local council where you were living at the time around the first 1-2 years of your life, the council keeps all these records on file and doesn't cost a thing to retrieve I got mine on the same day I queried into them. Dr. Waks said the records I obtained from the council were sufficient and I only needed a Flu Vaccination (which cost $20). (This may vary with you depending on age though).

About payments:

You have to make a few separate payments, one lot with George St Medical office (Mine was $300) then $20 with Pathology (separate) and $80 with Castlereagh Imaging (separate as well). They all take eftpos so you don't need to carry large amounts of cash on you.

WOW!!! Thank you so much for all the info... you're a legend! I have the kids blue books with all their records, looks like they will only need flu shots and HepB. We all had Chicken Pox in 2010, but will probably have to get a blood test to confirm our immunity as the doctor never did a blood test at the time we were spotty. I will need a tetanus (TDP), the MMR and the flu shot. I will make an appointment with my GP to get all that done before I make my appointment for my medical, so I am well prepared on the day. Thank You again and all the best on your journey!!!

Otherwise, Dr Waks or Dr Rappaport will give it to you during your visit.

I hope this info works, and if you have any more questions let me know! :)

You're welcome, glad to share my experience to help others out there - as a lot of people on here have helped me along the way!

About Chicken Pox.. Dr. Waks just asked me if I had it as a child, and I said yes and that was it!

Best of luck to you as well, if you have anymore questions I'll be more than happy to help if I can! :)

I really appreciate the time you have put into all the info you provided. Thanks for the heads up on the Chicken Pox, should save us having to have a blood test done.... I know the kids will appreciate one less needle! I could show the Doctor photos of the kids spots :)

Hi

I've just booked in for my medical on 27 Sept with Dr Waks - (FYI - Rappaport is not available till early October - earliest appointment was 3 Oct.) couple of questions.

I've received the email as per above and the girl told me to send it back within the next 3 days, I told her on the phone I'll have it before my appointment and she was ok with it, as I mentioned I'm back and forth from NZ at the moment and I'm limited with my availability, so needed to book as soon as possible to line up with my trips back to Sydney - she was fine with it.

1. I don't yet have my case number, should have it next week I expect, so is writing TBA ok?

2. the question - immigrant or non immigrant. I've put 'K1 non-immigrant', is that correct?

3. I also haven't yet been in contact with the Sydney consulate, but I expect I will be, is this just because they want to know which consulate to refer to?

thanks
