Affidavit of Support

Hello there,

My fiance(e) lives in the Mismas Occidental, Ozamiz Philippines, and I wanted to know if (for the K-1) visa, her embassy allows co-sponsorship/an affidavit of support. The reason I am asking is because, several people I have talked to have mentioned that the US Embassy in Manila is the ONLY Embassy that denies Co-sponsorship for the K-1 Visa (other visa's are sometimes allowed this affidavit of support?).

So my question is, how can I know for 100% certainty that my fiance(e) during her interview will be allowed to submit a co-sponsorship form without denying her her visa? Is that even possible?

What's more, I have heard that SSI disqualifies a household from applying to be an co-sponsor for the reason that this is not labeled as a 'stable income'. Is this true?

Very curious & REALLY need some help...

Thanks for your help in advance ~ I really appreciate it!

:help:

I too need info on this and/or links to relevant info. If this is indeed true, it should be a PINNED topic because it effects quite a few people who might waste a lot of time doing a K-1, only to be denied by this nasty little "secret".

I just called NVC and spoke with a rep. He said he had never heard of this and doubted very seriously that it is true and basically said the Embassy is required to accept all presented evidence. However, it has been stated on VJ quite often that reps rarely have a clue, so I'd like info from people that have actually been through the K-1 co-sponsor process.

if you are referring to the cosponsor issue, you would probably get a more informed response from the Manila embassy, but I can't be certain of that either. All I know is it seems to affect some while it doesn't affect others.

The U.S. Embassy Manila allows joint sponsors for K-1'ers on a case-by-case basis. There is no guarantee that the Embassy will accept a joint sponsor in your case.

The Embassy does not deny visas to those who do not meet the income guidelines. Instead, at their interview, the visa applicant is issued an MNL-IV-22 (221g) which gives them one year to submit proof of adequate income.

Receiving SSI does not disqualify anyone from being a joint sponsor. However, SSI can not be counted as income in order to meet the income requirement.

As a K-1'er, you need an income which meets or beats 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Here is the I-864P chart for 2012.

The NVC does not issue visas. Please do not take visa advice from an NVC call center rep.

Many people here on VJ have experience with the joint sponsor process at the U.S. Embassy Manila. These people are the ones you should listen to.

First off, thank you EVERYONE for all of your responses! :D I wish I had requested email notification for this post as well ~ I accidentally forgot it... x) I'm just smart that way, aren't I?

Anyway, thank you for your information... Our K-1 visa was sent to the NVC on July 31st, 2012, & now we are awaiting for the NVC to give us an appointment date for her visa appointment.

I have a request: Could anyone give me the list of documents needed to be filed for a cosponsor? I have a friend who is willing to cosponsor my fiancee & me (which is a blessing, since I have been without employment for a while now & have been unable to obtain a new job). They are asking what is needed, & I cannot fully answer this.

Naturally, of course, I am going to go to the USCIS page & google around to see what is needed. But if I could have a list of documents to run my check-list against (to double check everything) that would be a blessing & a gift from God!

Another request: I don't know how many of you here are believers in Christ, but I am asking for prayers from every brother & sister in our heavenly Father to pray for provision for the upcoming fees that the US Embassy will be requesting of me & my bride Faith. We are doing what we can to get the money, but with tickets being the price they are & with the prices at the US Embassy increasing on a regular basis, there's no telling how high the fees will rack before our appointment date will be.

Please pray ~ God's provision & His movement... that HE help my Beloved obtain her visa as quickly as possible (on the FIRST appointment), and that she would be able to come and meet my youngest brother before he dies... Yes I know this is a lot to ask of you all, but as a man who is desperate and struggling for hope, I have no where to turn except the loving prayers of my siblings in Jesus. =)

Thank you everyone again for all of your information! Really helpful! Praying she gets her visa ~ God pave the road with the richness of YOUR goodness! Amen.

~Adam

And what will the US Embassy in Manila do if you are currently unemployed, & do not meet the poverty guideline ~ hence why you are using a cosponsor? Will that be an instant visa denial? Cause if so, I don't want to send my fiancee there to be devastated over having to wait another year or so to see me ~ and my entire family.

*Bump*

Any information you can offer is much appreciated!

Sincerely, Adam

My thoughts exactly (that you would get more information directly from the Manila embassy). However, I spent a good hour trying to contact the Manila embassy via their number posted online at their website. But the number has been disconnected/discontinued. So if anyone has a phone number for the Manila embassy, please don't hesitate to share it with the group! :D

The NVC doesn't set visa appointments, that is done by her when she pays her visa fee at BPI, then goes to the USEM website or calls to schedule.

I don't mean to sound negative, but this is an EXPENSIVE process. If you are unemployed, getting approved will be tough. And if you don't have about $3000 set aside, then you will STRUGGLE completing the process of getting her here, getting married, and applying for AOS. $500 for medical and visa, $800-1500 to get her here, another $1100 for AOS... it adds up very quickly. I know this is not advice anyone wants to hear, but it is reality. And if your love is strong enough to make it thru 50 years of marriage, it can handle another year or two of being apart while you save up for this.

I appreciate your honesty, & I do not condemn a word you have spoken. Thank you for being up front & sharing the truth. It has not dawned on me this entire process and the costs that will come along with it. My question is, in your advice & if money wasn't the main concern (and I had a job which I have held for a few months), would it be more likely to get her visa approval ~ especially if I had a job?

Another question I have is, how long can she hold off before scheduling her appointment at the USEM? I know there is a specific time she has to schedule her appointment or her application (call it that with me for a moment) will expire and the entire process will start over again.

Just a few questions that, if possible to answer, I would LOVE answered. =) Once again, thanks for your advice! No anger or sorrow here, just honesty & a desire to know the truth ~ and what could possible be done. Thanks again!

One question you should ask is do you even have a good-solid co-sponser to assist you? The number you can call and get right in is (214)571-1600. You will get right through if you go to the prompts to set-up an appointment, then tell them you have a question. Good Luck..
