Sean Penn Campaigns for Hugo Chavez's Reelection in Venezuela

Venezuelan despot Hugo Chavez is one of America's sworn enemies.

Despite this, actor Sean Penn visited Venezuela Sunday to campaign for one of the world's most despised dictators.

Reuters reports:

U.S. actor Sean Penn joined President Hugo Chavez at an election rally in Venezuela on Sunday, bringing a dash of Hollywood to the campaign as he rode with him atop a truck past cheering supporters.

Penn is a friend of Chavez, who hopes to win a new six-year term on October 7. The campaign has turned into the toughest fight of the president's political career.

"Thank you very much for visiting us again, dear friend," Chavez said after introducing Penn to the big crowd in the central city of Valencia. "We're all Americans, from the north, the center, the south. Long live the American continent!"

Penn, in a white shirt and sunglasses and accompanied by Argentine producer Fernando Sulichin, waved from the stage, fist-bumped and hugged Chavez, but did not address the rally

THIS is why we have freedom of speech. In some less enlightened countries Penn would be imprisioned for speaking his mind. Fortunately we have a lot of brave men who have sacrificed their lives so you and I and Sean Penn can say what we want.

Maybe it is Sean Penn that should move to Venezuela. I wasn't aware that supporting "one of America's sworn enemies", "one of the world's most despised dictators" was supporting those who fought for our freedom. Seems like that is the complete opposite.

Supporting a sworn enemy is NOT supporting those who fought for freedom. If I had said that, I would be wrong, but I did not say that. That does not prevent you from distortig what I said though, which is your freedom. It is a tactic often used by people with no defense for their position...change the argument of the opponent to something that was never said. I always let it stand for what it is...mental bankruptcy. I welcome anyone opposing me in a debate to use the tactic. I enjoy it when they do.

The people who fought for our freedom fought for the freedom to say things that are NOT popular. Popular speech needs no protection. Penn can move to Venuzuela if he wants, or stay here if he wants. That is freedom. Sorry to see you are uncomfortable with it. I am perfectly comfortable with Sean Penn being able to say anything he wants.
