Given that Thailand to Florida is an incredibly long flight (more so when traveling with a 1-year-old), I was thinking it would be a good idea to stop off in Hawaii for a few days when my wife gets her visa before continuing on. This would give us a little break in the long flights and we can enjoy Hawaii for a bit. Also, we wouldn't have to worry about how long it would take to get through immigration in order to make a connecting flight. And then, when we fly from Hawaii to Florida, we won't have to go through immigration again.

Anyone see anything negative with doing it that way? Is it allowed?

Of course it's allowed. You'd need a vacation after such a long wait anyways. I'm sure the port of entry would allow you to immigrate at Hawaii and then flying to Florida is as simple as hopping the next plane.

That's awesome! My wife will be so excited when I broach the subject of stopping off in Hawaii for a few days. :-) It will make the process of getting from Thailand to Florida much more relaxing.

Yep. Not a problem at all. Just make sure once in the U.S. she doesn't leave the U.S. without advance parole or a green card.

DIsregard the underlined above. I just noticed she is CR-1/IR-1. She'll get an I-551 stamp that's good for a year at POE, which is the equvalent of a green card.

as long as the airport in Hawaii is a port of entry then I don’t see why you can’t do that... my friend had to change all her plans around because the airport they were flying into was not considered a port of entry airport... just an fyi

have a wonderful time!!!!!!!! you have a lucky wife =) .........

What she will receive from CBP is a standard admission stamp on the page of her passport next to the visa itself. It is the combination of the visa and the admission stamp that is the temporary green card. CBP is no longer placing special I-551 stamps in passports in this instance.

You're right. I went and back and looked and it says this at the bottom of her visa:

"UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-551 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RESIDENCY FOR 1 YEAR"

I guess the result is the same. Still have the equivalent of a 1 year green card.

yes its a USA POE and its allowed and Hawaii is one of the easiest and fastest POE you can do, considering all the tourists we have visit, here the average is around no more than 20-30 mins in and out

Glad to know it's a point of entry. I will start looking into nice hotels we can stay in and some fun activities we can do (where it won't be a problem to have our son with us). I'm thinking 4 or 5 days in Hawaii will be a good little vacation.

I know Hawaii has multiple airports...does it matter which one we fly into, or do all international flights to Hawaii go to the same one?

To be sure, you can always look on the CBP website, call CBP at the location you intend to land, and then let them know that your wife is immigrating and you need to make sure she can immigrate at that port of entry.

The link above shows you all of Hawaii's ports of entry.

ANY international airport is a port of entry. It is impossible to fly internationally to an airport that is not a POE. That makes no sense. An airport that accepts international flights, by law and definition, must be able to serve as a Port of Entry.

We are no where near being approved but once we get visa to leave a country is it ok to stop off somewhere else before heading to the US. For example, we would be flying out of Morocco. I wanted to travel to Belgium to visit friends and they can meet my husband; then fly into NY after a couple of days. Is that possible? Do we need to tell the consulate we expect to have a stopover in Europe? Will we have problems in London or whereever airport we fly into in Europe?

Thanks,
