The corn industry gets fat subsidies - billions of dollars a year - from the taxpayer. They can afford to pay anyone to say anything.

This guy has no links to the corn industry. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good hysterical episode though.

If you read fox news, sure.

No, just the American Council on Science and Health is all. But if you want to blame the Fox boogy man go right ahead.

There has been no link to cancer and DDT.

The links to wildlife harm and DDT have also never been proven.

You quoted an ancient document from 1998. Here are some recent articles...

DDT and Breast Cancer in Young Women: New Data on the Significance of Age at Exposure

Results

High levels of serum p,p′-DDT predicted a statistically significant 5-fold increased risk of breast cancer among women who were born after 1931. These women were under 14 years of age in 1945, when DDT came into widespread use, and mostly under 20 years as DDT use peaked. Women who were not exposed to p,p′-DDT before 14 years of age showed no association between p,p′-DDT and breast cancer (p = 0.02 for difference by age).

Conclusions

Exposure to p,p′-DDT early in life may increase breast cancer risk. Many U.S. women heavily exposed to DDT in childhood have not yet reached 50 years of age. The public health significance of DDT exposure in early life may be large.

DDT Compound Speeds Breast Cancer Growth

THURSDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- A new Canadian study may finally explain how a key compound found in the U.S.-banned insecticide DDT accelerates the growth of breast cancer tumors.

The new report, published in the open access journalBreast Cancer Research, suggests that DDT's main metabolite blocks a pathway of a hormone that would otherwise help inhibit growth in normally responsive breast cancer cells.

Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (Organochlorines) - DDT

Problems associated with DDT, as well as many chlorinated hydrocarbons, involved their tendency to concentrate in the fat of humans, livestock, aquatic foodchains, and wildlife. This latter phenomena, called bioaccumulation, has had, and continues to have, severe adverse effects on many forms of wildlife.

Many predatory birds were heavily impacted by DDT. DDT was a major reason for the decline of the bald eagle in North America in the 1950s and 1960s as well as the brown pelican and the peregrine falcon. DDT and its metabolites (breakdown products), DDD and DDE, are toxic to embryos and disrupt calcium absorption,**** thereby impairing eggshell quality. Studies in the 1960s and 1970s failed to find a mechanism for the hypothesized thinning. However, more recent studies in the 1990s and 2000s have laid the blame at the feet of DDE. Some studies have shown that although DDE levels have fallen dramatically, eggshell thickness remains 10–12 percent thinner than before DDT was first used. In addition, DDT, DDE and other chlorinated hydrocarbons, can affect the parents behavior during incubation and can result in death of unhatched embryos and eagle chicks.

DDT is also highly toxic to aquatic life, including crayfish, daphnids, sea shrimp and many species of fish. DDT may be moderately toxic to some amphibian species, especially in the larval stages.

There are so many more links.

UCLA study finds high fructose corn syrup hurts memory, learning ability

......

Consumption of high-fructose corn syrup in beverages may play a role in the epidemic of obesity1,2

The digestion, absorption, and metabolism of fructose differ from those of glucose. Hepatic metabolism of fructose favors de novo lipogenesis. In addition, unlike glucose, fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion or enhance leptin production. Because insulin and leptin act as key afferent signals in the regulation of food intake and body weight, this suggests that dietary fructose may contribute to increased energy intake and weight gain. Furthermore, calorically sweetened beverages may enhance caloric overconsumption. Thus, the increase in consumption of HFCS has a temporal relation to the epidemic of obesity, and the overconsumption of HFCS in calorically sweetened beverages may play a role in the epidemic of obesity.

Cancer cells slurp up fructose, US study finds

* Findings challenge common wisdom about sugars

Aug 2 (Reuters) - Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same.

Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.

They said their finding, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types.

"These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation," Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote.

"They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth."

Americans take in large amounts of fructose, mainly in high fructose corn syrup, a mix of fructose and glucose that is used in soft drinks, bread and a range of other foods.

I just posted documents from the government. Stop watching fox news.

So your willing to trade the small increase in the possible weak link between DDT and breast cancer for the millions of Africans that die of malaria?

Mighty nice of you.

BTW, Fox news has nothing to do with any of this. Why do you keep bringing it up? How do you know I even watch Fox? It seems you are fixated on Fox. You might want to see a Dr about that.

Drink tea! It's much better for you.

Link Found Between High Fructose Corn Syrup and Diabetes

A study conducted by researchers at Rutgers University found that soft drinks containing high fructose corn syrup had high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by other studies to potentially trigger diabetes.

......

Elevated levels of reactive carbonyls in the blood are known to cause complications for diabetes, and based on the study data, Ho estimates that a single can of soda has five times the concentration of this compound than the bloodstream concentration of a diabetic person.

Ho and his research associates also discovered that a specific compound in tea(epigallocatechin gallate) reduces the levels of reactive carbonyls in high fructose corn syrup soft drinks. Ho claims that people consume too much high fructose corn syrup in this country and that growing scientific evidence is exposing the dangers of soft drinks, especially for children.

Although a tea-derived supplement may provide a promising way to counter the harmful effects of carbonated beverages, researchers believe eliminating or reducing consumption of high fructose corn syrup is the safest approach.

The author is full of #######.

I'd love to see who paid this guy for his study because there's no way someone in the corn industry didn't pay him off.

There's a reason many nations have outright BANNED HFCS. It's not healthy at all. It's not good for you, at all.

I know several people who cut HFCS out of their diet (including myself) and lost weight while still eating the exact same products/keeping the same relative diet using pure cane sugar products instead of HFCS.

That stuff it garbage.

Need evidence of that? Stop drinking HFCS laced sodas for awhile and then try and drink one after a couple of months. It will practically make you sick from how thick/gunky it is.

I rarely agree with you but on this one you are absolutely right! I am certain this guy was a paid shill for the corporate interests trying to literally shove this HFCS sh!t down our throats! It is unfortunate but true that just being a physician does not make you an honorable and honest person!

Well, it is sugar. Fructose and sucrose are both sugars, just different kinds. It just isn't cane sugar. I agree that people should have the right to choose what they eat. I haven't a problem with that, just don't demonize something that doesn't deserve it.

Sucrose is sugar (50% fructose and 50% glucose), HFCS is not. Hence, it should not be called sugar.

Oh, BTW. I think the responsible use of DDT should be allowed. The banning of DDT killed millions of people due to the sharp rise in malaria after its use was banned. That is another example of junk science taking over realistic safety.

I drink nothing but tea with Stevia sweetener. No soda for me, always been that way. If you want to avoid the problems with fructose you need to give up all fruits, honey and cane sugars. The hype about HFCS is just that, hype.

Clearly you have an issue with facing the facts, a typical trait of a fox news viewer.

Why do you get to decide what a "possible weak link" is? Why didn't you address the wildlife issue? You said there was no link, the government and many other sources say otherwise. Are you more qualified than the government because you read a medical journal?

Sucrose is sugar (50% fructose and 50% glucose), HFCS is not. Hence, it should not be called sugar.

Sugar is the generalised name for a class of sweet-flavored substances used as food. They are carbohydrates and as this name implies, are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources. Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose, fructose and galactose. The table or granulated sugar most customarily used as food is sucrose, a disaccharide. Other disaccharides include maltose and lactose.

A basic chemistry class would be in order for you if you don't think HFCS isn't sugar.

News flash! Cane sugar, fruits and honey all have fructose in them. As Big Dog pointed out HFCS is 55% fructose and cane sugar is 50% fructose.

You have another straw man?

The body doesn't metabolize fructose just like glucose, according to research, and HFCS is metabolized differently from regular fructose. However, all types of sugar can create havoc to the body. Anything that elevates your glycemic levels should be closely monitored, especially for those with diabetes (which has reached epidemic proportions). Google Fornier's Gangrene. I've taken care of a couple of patients who had uncontrolled diabetes, who had it. Diabetes is probably the worst disease out there right now because it leads to all kinds of other afflictions. Lower your sugar intake and especially HFCS sweetened drinks.

The digestion, absorption, and metabolism of fructose differ from those of glucose.

You will say anything won't you? Even absolute factually false garbage!

No it isn't. Calm down or you will blow a gasket. The hype about DDT is way overblown. The usefulness of DDT greatly outweighs any slight harm it causes. Tell me, do you like millions of dead people in the third world? I guess they don't count huh?
