You can't buy a car without a SSN

I decided to use International Autosource and order a vehicle before I left for the US for delivery to a local dealer after I arrive.

The dealer is in Oregon, they now tell me I cannot buy a car in Oregon without a SSN and an Oregon drivers license. Not a big problem just changed the order to my wife's name, but I am starting to get worn down by American bureaucracy on a par with anything I dealt with when in parts of southern Africa. At least in Africa you could tip someone 20 dollars to resolve a problem :D

Think that is bad, in New York. Sales tax is required to be paid on the car, and at the tax rate of where the buyer lives. So if the buyer lives in a high tax county and purchases the car in a lower sales tax county they still have to pay the higher tax rate.

Also if the buyer purchases the car out of state, they still have to pay the sales tax to New York when they register it.

And this one relay irritates me, if I buy a used car either from a dealer or a private individual like the person down the road, when I go to register and transfer title to my self at the DMV, I have to pay sales tax on the amount or value of the car. This is what is annoying, Someone paid tax on the new value, then if it gets sold used someone else pays MORE tax on it. So every time the car changes ownership tax is paid.

Be happy you will live in Oregon, no sales tax, but then they will find other ways to tax you.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

There another advantage to that method. No running costs while the car is garaged until I get released from prison :D

Another option to Autosource that works better is Lion Leasing (lionleasing.com), they offer financing of new and used vehicles any make or model. You do not need a U.S. credit history and in some states not even a U.S. drivers license to be approved. They offer the service before or after you arrive in the states.

I read about them in The Telegraph online.

With Autosource you are limited by only having new cars and a limited range of makes/models, and you have to sign their contract and pay a deposit before moving to the U.S.

I read on Lion Leasing's website that they offer a Personal Car Shopper Service (how cool is that) "According to your wishes we will find your vehicle for you, negotiate the price and check the condition. This ensures that you get a good price and that the vehicle is in good condition."

Be happy you will live in Oregon, no sales tax, but then they will find other ways to tax you.

Gets still worse in VA, where they charge property-tax on the car; if you moved the car from out of state and don't transfer the tags (supposed to be done within 30 days, but oft honoured in breach), the county you live in then assesses a property tax based on the month in which you cross 60 days of living there (always dating it from the first of that month--so if you bought the car on 03/31, you get clobbered from 05/01) and tacks on a collection-fee ($110) to boot.

Another way is to buy the car in BC and then transfer it down to OR--but that is even more bureaucratic (a FAQ in Canada regional forum).

Since Oregon does not charge sales tax on vehicle sales, all kinds of creepy people prefer to by their cars there and that has been abused which resulted in the current law. For example, if you buy that $1mio collector Ferrari at auction and register it in Oregon for at least a year, you save a cool 82,5K in sales tax over doing it in California. Worth having an "address"in Oregon and waiting a year before changing from and OR to a CA plate. Even Jay Leno's Tank Roadster runs on Oregon plates . . .

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
