Hi,

My new wife and I discovered last spring that we might not be able to have children together. We had a ton of tests done and the doctor says that it will be nearly impossible for me to father a child of my own. He told us to get a sperm donor. After a few months of thinking about it, we decided that we want to do this. Now, the question is if we should wait until she is here in the United States with me or should we start the treatment now...I am concern that the CO during her interview might denied her visa if she ends up having a baby before she her interview and the baby is not biologically mine. I don't know...we have thought about having a baby together for 3 years now,and to have to wait god knows how long to make our dream come true....is a bit hard to take....do you think using a sperm donor to get pregnant, while my wife is waiting for her case to be adjudicated is a bad idea?

Not really sure how that could affect her getting a visa, but you know that if your wife does become pregnant you may have to wait until after she gives birth to fly her to the USA. Keep that in mind if you wanna be present when your child is born.

What country is she from? Some countries' US embassies will be pickier than others. If you do go ahead, I'd make sure to get documentation from the clinic.

Do you know the timeline, should you decide to do this in her country? ie could she start next month or is there a waitinglist? If there is a waitinglist, set the wheels in motion now. If no waitinglist, I'd probably wait a bit anyways because if she did this now and got pregnant right away, she'd give birth just around the time of her visa interview, which could cause delays even if the paternity of the child is not an issue, and she could not travel heavily pregnant either.

Do you plan to sue a donor from that country? If you are of a different race/ skin colour, it may be difficult to get a sperm donor matching your appearance there.

Are ART services there of good quality? Can you afford ART in the USA, if you decide to go that way? If you do it here, you might be able to find a good clinic that does ICSI and have a biological child.

She is from EL SALVADOR

Is a few weeks wait time for the clinic we visited in Guatemala...We tried IVF once....$4900, much cheaper than here in NY. Did not work. Doctor mentioned ICSI, but to spend that kind of money again and it if does not work.. I will be much more devastated. I am the oldest of my siblings and even the youngest already have kids. My do nothing little brother has two at 21 with two different women,

There is a good clinic in El Salvador that we have an appointment with today. That is the question, I am latino of African descent and she is not, and El Salvador is not known for their black population, so we might have to use Panama which has a prestigious clinic for the same price as in El Salvador and do offer donors with similar racial traits as me.

I would probably go ahead. If she gets pregnant, when she goes to interview make sure she has documentation from the clinic about the ART done, and a letter with original signature from you saying you know what was done (maybe even if documentation of you being with her at the time, if you can), and are happy about the pregnancy.

Before you proceed with this , please speak to a lawyer, there have been cases as recently that an IVF/ART baby has had an problem in getting a passport to be able to enter the US.

DO not take the guidance from a DIYB, there have not been alot of cases for anyone to have experience or knowlege of how immigration would act on such.

I read about the Chicago woman in Israel who was denied passports for her children, because they didn't have any biological connection to her. It might be wise to just wait. I heard that the visa first given at the consulate is good for six months, we could try once or twice after she gets her visa and see if she gets pregnant.

Thank you. We have been debating this for months...I just want her here with me.. I never thought that I would care about anyone as I do about her. I talk to her everyday for an hour and text a few times during the day...the distance and knowing how dangerous El Salvador makes it so difficult....

This is excellent advice I would second. My own thoughts are to wait until she has a green card, then go back and do these procedures. The extra trip costs peanuts compared to all the other expenses.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
