question about getting SSN

My husband's green card was recently approved following our AOS interview. I was under the impression from this forum that once he got the card, he needed to go to a social security office and apply for a number. A person I work with (who has helped MANY of his family members move here from his home country) said that's no longer necessary. He said just a couple weeks ago one of his relatives got a green card and the SSN card came automatically.

Anyone know if that's true? I have no reason to doubt him, but I also don't want to sit around waiting for a card that's not coming.

8/02/2012 - Email notification of GC production at 5:30pm

8/09/2012 - Welcome letter and I-130 approval letter received.

8/10/2012 - Green card received. :)

You have to go and apply for a SSN if he doesn't already have one. Its not just gonna pop in the mail...

You have to go and apply for a SSN if he doesn't already have one. Its not just gonna pop in the mail...

That's what I thought, until my co-worker assured me that USCIS gives the information to SSA and the SSN card would come. But he's more familiar with spousal visas than AOS. Maybe it works differently for them?

This is only true for people entering the US on an immigrant visa. As part of the process they go through, one of the questions on their forms specifically asks whether or not they want to apply for a social security number and card. If they check this box then after they enter the United States their social security card arrives automatically in the mail without them needing to do anything (their green card arrives the same way).

However, this does not apply for people obtaining a green card via adjustment of status. To get a social security number and card you must complete an SS-5 form (available on www.ssa.gov) and appear in person at your local social security office.
