Cdns do NOT use the Waiver program!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

How about you use the forum to its maximum-----use the search feature--- as this is prob the #1 topic in the Cdn forum! Lots of posts on the topic-----You can say whatever you want, the POE catches you in a lie, no 1 here suffers--just you!!

For me at the pre-clearance in Calgary International (except 1st visit):

1st visit down - visiting friends to US (it was first visit after all) - this was at PIA. Crossing back to Canada told CBP visited boyfriend (because we had decided to continue relationship)

2nd visit down - 1 1/2 month later - visiting boyfriend for Xdays. Brought daughter. Asked how we met - told him online. No issues.

3rd visit - He came here

4th visit down - 4 1/2 months later - visiting boyfriend. Brought daughter. No issues.

5th visit down - 4 months later - visiting boyfriend. He asked if I was going to get married down there. I said not yet. No issues.

6th visit down - 3 months later - asked what I was going to do down there. Said going on a road trip with friends. Also truthful as this was what I was doing (there were others going as well). No issues.

I have not been asked to prove ties to Canada or been put in secondary. However I have always brought proof of ties to Canada.

I personally felt that it was always best for me to tell them that I was going to visit my boyfriend as I wasn't sure how connected the databases are between the USCIS, Consulates and the border crossings.

so

did you file yet and get married????

Will you use that first plane ticket to show a bonafide releationship for proof???

I spoke to a lawyer today about this he said dont lie but saying visiting a friend or friends is ok and will not affect the CR1.

They dont know what you did down there and I could visit my friends and perhaps one of them is my girlfriend so me saying visiting friends is truthful.

If i say visiting friends and then they ask a girlfriend?

I will say yes and be truthful im only answering what they ask and nothing more.

Why say the magic word and then get hasseled and denied? Then im out of money and cant visit for holidays and then get hasseled every time you go over thats not right to me.

I've flown through Pearson to visit my then boyfriend MANY times. I said "boyfriend" each time and never got pulled into secondary. They just asked when I was coming back.

I was honest and truthful, smiled (but no fake smile, I was happy to be visiting my bf) and confident because I was telling the truth and there's nothing to fear if you are being honest. Honestly, I've had more problems at land crossings than airport crossings.

Do you have a job? any kind of responsibility you can get a letter for saying when you're expected back? I've never been asked for this, but I always carried a letter from my boss saying when I was expected back at work.

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

If you ask a question but only want to hear one answer, then don't bother asking... I referred to my then-boyfriend as my fiance when passing through Pearson before and didn't have any problems. Even if you're just seeing "friends" you should come prepared with evidence of ties. If you don't bring evidence of ties and then lie to the officer and then they ask for proof you won't overstay, then good luck.

When my husband first came to see me, we weren't officially dating "just friends". When he crossed the border they pulled him into secondary and phoned me to see if I knew he was coming. I can't remember the specific questions they asked, but they basically wanted to know who he was (to me) "I like him, we're meeting for the first time, but we are just friends right now." and make sure I knew he was coming.

Although I think this is extremely rare and I've actually never heard of this happening to anyone else, what if they call your girlfriend and say "Do you know so-and-so?" and she says "yeah he's my boyfriend." when you've told them she is your friend, you're in for a bad time.

It's your life though. You could be denied entry even if you say "visiting friends". The best thing is to have proof of ties.

There are many ways to look at it and more or less it comes down to the POE officer. One always wants to keep it simple and to the point BUT one never wants to box themself into a lie!! You may say just a friend and that may work for 1 POE officer, BUT the next time you may say friend and he may poke further and now that friend is a girl friend or a husband/wife, now for some POE officers they could be fine with that OR they may grow suspicious and further investigate or they may be ticked off on why you were not giving all the details. Up to you, what you do does not affect us--only you. Always have evidence of returning to Canada, many times they don;t even ask for it, but sometimes they do and may or may not make a difference in their decision. I have found, always be HONEST and show RESPECT and you will be fine.
