hi my wife and I are about to send our AOS paperwork away but I had to go see a civil surgeon first to make sure all my shots were up to date. When I was in London I only had to get another 2 shots and thought i was excempt from the varicella shot as I am from the UK but when I went and saw the civil surgeon today he said that I need the shot or proof that I've had chicken pox before …….Can anyone tell me if I do need this shot or not ???

At the medical exam, if you told your doctor you had the chicken pox, he/she should've written "VH" on the vaccination form which is all the exemption you need. You don't need the shot if it says VH.

Most doctors accept verbal confirmation, but if this one won't, then either see another one, get a blood titre test for antibodies (costs $$), or get the shot (it won't hurt you but I understand why you don't want it).

If money is the issue, try to see if the county or other local health service has free shots (my husband got a free MMR shot). Then bring proof of the shot to the CS.

Look at the 7th column. If a series of shots is complete, the column heading says to put a check or write VH If the patient has a history of varicella (aka chickenpox). A k1 is not excused because they don't give the shot in the UK. That only works for spouse visas. As a K1 you have opportunity to get the shot in the US before you apply for AOS. Look up the "technical Instructions for Civil Surgeons" and you will find it says verbal confirmation from you of having varicella is acceptable. Find it, print it, and show him his instructions.
