Is that all you need an EAD? I have not gotten my GC yet.

Is there restrictions on that SSN or should I just wait for my GC to get one with no restrictions is there are some ?

The restricion you are talking about "NOT VALID FOR WORK WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION" should not be printed on the SSC when using the EAD--as the EAD IS that authorization as is the GC. If you look at the I-9 you will see that all you have to do is show your GC and your employer will never see the SSC. In all my years of employment, only one employer saw my SSC because that was before I had my passport. I use my passport and just tell them my SSN. We will visit the SSA when/if my wife decides to get citizenship to remove the wording, but until then her SSC has the "restriction" wording.

That restriction is printed on the SS card before you get, and when you have your EAD. The EAD is the DHS authorization that is needed along with the SSN to work. You cannot remove that stipulation from the SS card until you have your green card and no longer need a separate work authorization document to be employed.

The only restriction is that you need the EAD along with your SSN to be able to work. The SSN works like any other one for everything such as getting a license/ID and opening, filing taxes or being added to bank and insurance accounts. You can get the SSN now using your EAD, then return later when you have your green card to update it in their system that you are a permanent resident and you will be issued a new SS card without the restriction printed on it. If you think you can wait for the green card, and have no need for an SSN right now, then you can wait. That is up to you.

To clarify, you do not need an EAD to apply for a social security number. My husband applied for his as soon as we were married, with his I-94, copy of the K-1, copy of marriage certificate, etc.

Of course, that social security number did not permit him to work (he needed his EAD for that). But, I felt better getting the SS# as soon as possible.

We live in Pennsylvania, so we were also able to get his driver's license with just that same information (no need to wait for EAD or green card).

NOA1: May 16, 2011

NOA2: November 16, 2011

Interview: February 1, 2012 - APPROVED

Visa in Hand: February 9, 2012

POE: February 21, 2012

Married: February 27, 2012

It is true. You can, and probably should, go ahead and apply for the SSN about 10-14 days after arriving in the US, married yet or not. There is a guide about applying for the SSN here on VJ even.

However, if you did not go ahead and apply for it, then you typically need to wait until you have the EAD or green card because you cannot apply for it if your I-94 has less than 2 weeks left before it expires.

Can you apply for a ssn with just the EAD? I had heard people sayin the get a ssn beginning with 0 or 1 anyone heard of this? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi,

Until June 2011 all social security numbers started with 3 numbers that indicated the state in which the ssn was assigned.

Up till June 2011, the following prefix numbers beginning with 0 were allocated to the following states:

001-003 New Hampshire (NH)

004-007 Maine (ME)

008-009 Vermont (VT)

010-034 Massachusetts (MA)

035-039 Rhode Island (RI)

040-049 Connecticut (CT)

050-134 New York (NY)

From June 2011 social security numbers are generated randomly so you could get any number.
