Do not plan wedding?

Sorry that I open yet another topic in one day but this question doesn't fit in my last one.

On the receipt of the form I have to send to my Consulate in Amsterdam the following statement is made:

I also understand that I should NOT give up my job. dispose of property, or make any final travel and wedding arrangements until a visa is actually issued to me.

How do I interpret this? I thought it would be a safe bet to set a date for the wedding after we get our NOA2 and that it would be especially safe to set a date if we know the interview date.

How do you guys do this? Did you set a wedding date before or after the interview. If before, did the interviewer ask about this? I'm not willing to lie, so if it's wise not to plan anything, then I'd rather not plan.

I can't help but think my last sentence was a bit cryptic : o)

We set it afterwards. You can do what you want, it isn't the law that it should or should not be set. They are just advising you that there are no guarantees of when you will get the visa. My husband had an interview in January and it took until April to get his visa. If we had planned a wedding before then we might have not made it.

You two can throw a date in the air by which you would like to be married, but making concrete arrangements like booking something non refundable may blow up in your face. Buy your rings, talk about flowers, etc., but pick a date that would fall within the 90 day rule. Guestimate when you think you'll get the NOA2, an interview, and enter US.

The consulate officer asked my husband if we set a date for the wedding. We had not and he told them such since it would be difficult not knowing how long the wait would be for the visa. She stated she understood. I don't think you'd have a problem either way, but likely to come up during the interview. Best of luck!

pretty sure they are just saying they are not responsible for any delays that may cause additional cost to you in the way of cancelling/changing tickets, wedding preparations, loss of income etc.

If there is a delay of any kind then you setting dates will be in throuble, I took another 3 months after receiving my K-1 Visa to sell my house and quit my job and my wife arranged the wedding in the US.

You can take the gamble but you do this at your own risk, the Consulate does not take any responsibility.

Good Luck with your Journeykicking.gifkicking.gifkicking.gif

That statement translates to: Don't come crying to the Embassy if your visa isn't approved and you've already quit your job or if you had already paid for a venue and you haven't received your passport with the visa yet.

That is a standard disclaimer. It is just a reminder that your visa is not approved until it is approved. Anxiety sometimes takes the best of people and some end up jumping the gun and preparing themselves to travel on a date that is unrealistic vis a vis their process. Since there is no set date by which your visa must be approved, it would be unwise for you to plan on any dates for your trip or wedding.

In other words, just carry on with your life and wait until the process is complete before making decisions in regards to quitting your job, selling property, booking tickets, etc.

Just sit back and relax -certainly easier said than done...

Good luck!

Hey there, I checked your timeline, it seems you already progressed to sending package 3 or 4? when is your NOA2 date? my NOA1 date is not much later than yours, and we haven't heard anything yet, we are pending with Vermont also.

Sorry this is not really answering your question. But I already quit my job, this month is my last month, we are just going to marry at court once I arrive in the US, (maybe November) and we will have the wedding next summer, hopefully in Hawaii :innocent:

We are not yet on that stage unfortunately but we're getting close since I see many feb approvals so I won't be surprised if the end of August is our celebratory approval!

Same here, we have nor reason to believe that our Visa will not be approved. I quit my job and we have arranged a flexible venue and a flexible caterer so the moment I land in America it will take us 2 months to finalize everything and throw one big party!

Which brings me to a big thank you to all the quick responses! I'm glad so many people interpret it as a disclaimer and not something that is required. : o)

Also thank Kristi for giving an insight of the interview.

The most inspiring part is seeing so many veterans here, that already went through the whole process and are MARRIED!! :D

We set a prospective date based on an average processing time of 8 months, so we felt like we had something to work towards and that it was a little more real. But we knew that wasn't a solid date and didn't book anything. We planned everything so it could be put into motion when we had a firm date. We got our rings and my dress - and waited for everything else. We were lucky and were able to bring the date forward, but others haven't been so lucky.

There's no harm in getting rings, getting a dress, and deciding on what you want, so long as you don't book or pay for anything before you know that Visa is in your hands. That saves you losing money.

Good luck :D
