Wow....finding this post and reading some of of the notes felt like I was reading all of my thoughts and frustration. The process is hard enough but not to have an idea of when our life can start together is a killer. I do hope we all are united with our other half soon.

Here is how we are keeping in touch. I am using skype and calleasy for calling via phone and paying $.13 per minute. Viber sounds good but I don't think it works in southern Sudan, Uganda or Kenya. Is anyone using it for africa?

So do I...I haven't seen my fiancé since Jan 11, 2012 after I left Philippines for vacation. But you know what? One thing I’ve learned about this journey. My relationship with my fiancé got stronger everyday...yap once in a blue moon we had arguement (who doesn't anyways??)

At least up to now we are here for each other and cannot wait to be together soon: dance: dance:

Things happen for a reason....so just hold on guys...we could able to make this big trial   god bless us ALL

For those who are fortunate enough to have iphones (some of these apps are also on BB and google) this is my list of apps:

- iMessage (messaging with read receipt timestamp)

- FaceTime (video calling Wifi only)

- Tango (video/calls on 3G 4G or WiFi)

- WhatsApp (messaging with read receipt and voice/video clips)

- Viber (similar to iMessage + calls)

- Google Voice (mostly for texting)

- Pinger (formaly textfree, create account and can receive free incoming calls, so calls from US are considered local to me in my office in NYC)

- MagicJack (has a mobile app that can be linked to the account, receive and make calls as if in the USA)

- Find My Friends (location tracking, uses GPS)

- NOT AN APP: And then I have the prepaid Orbitel calling card balance (with no access code) on speed dial in case her internet is iffy I can just do a regular long distance call.

Please keep in mind that for all these apps to work the person abroad should also have intenet access either through WiFi or 3G, currently I pay COP$65,000 (~US$40) a month (for my wife) for this service (provider: COMCEL).

I thank god for this technology and mobile advances, since they to some extent really provide some sense of closeness.

As you can see we have several apps that do the same functions, better to have backups for when some don't really work as intended.

Stay strong, we are all in this but with faith and time all should be complete soon.

is this apps working ONLY for iphone to iphone?

how about my fiance not using an iphone? is this apps work for me still?

As long as there is internet you can use Tango, Viber, textfree, among other mentioned in this thread. Worst case a MagicJack would be better than .13/min.

Some of these also work on Google/Android phones, Tango even works on PC. I know RIM/BB has whatsapp, you will have to see/search for the apps in the respective phones application store.

What type of phone?

Reading this reminds me I'm not alone. I'm glad I found this forum. It's so informative and has very understanding and sympathetic people on it. Hang in there, OP. It'll all be worth it once you get to kiss that face you get to see everyday on Skype!

My wife and I are so busy with work, and being in different time zones makes things difficult. I must say though, I'm getting pretty fit with all of the gym time I'm putting in. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised when we see each other again, assuming that isn't for a couple of months.
