For those who are fortunate enough to have iphones (some of these apps are also on BB and google) this is my list of apps:

- iMessage (messaging with read receipt timestamp)

- FaceTime (video calling Wifi only)

- Tango (video/calls on 3G 4G or WiFi)

- WhatsApp (messaging with read receipt and voice/video clips)

- Viber (similar to iMessage + calls)

- Google Voice (mostly for texting)

- Pinger (formaly textfree, create account and can receive free incoming calls, so calls from US are considered local to me in my office in NYC)

- MagicJack (has a mobile app that can be linked to the account, receive and make calls as if in the USA)

- Find My Friends (location tracking, uses GPS)

- NOT AN APP: And then I have the prepaid Orbitel calling card balance (with no access code) on speed dial in case her internet is iffy I can just do a regular long distance call.

Please keep in mind that for all these apps to work the person abroad should also have intenet access either through WiFi or 3G, currently I pay COP$65,000 (~US$40) a month (for my wife) for this service (provider: COMCEL).

I thank god for this technology and mobile advances, since they to some extent really provide some sense of closeness.

As you can see we have several apps that do the same functions, better to have backups for when some don't really work as intended.

Stay strong, we are all in this but with faith and time all should be complete soon.

You are not alone - this process is torture :( I have only seen my husband once(for only 1 week this past May) since we were married in December 2010...Today is his birthday and I just want to be able to celebrate w/him - It's so hard to be apart for so long - but when we are finally together our marriage will be very strong because we will appreciate our time together more...

Also wanted to share how we stay connected:

** Skype

** Oovoo - like skype but you can video chat w/more than one person at a time (also has an iphone app)

iphone apps:

** Viber - amazing - our main form of communication...

** Kakoa Talk - free international texting - you can also send pics, video, & sound messages - my husand takes little videos throughout the day and sends them to me :)

** Pair - app for long-distanc relationships (you can draw pics for/with each other and also 'thumb-kiss' - press your thumb on the same spot on the screen and it vibrates)

**Voxer -supposedly like a walkie-talkie for your iphone - but I haven't tried it yet....

**Words w/fiends

**Draw Something

God delays but doesn't forget.

Good Evening Everyone,

I was feeling a little down today and I thought I could express my self a little on here. Seeing as most of you have found yourselves in similar situations, I thought I could write a little bit here to remind other people (and myself) that we are not alone. I am really missing my wife these days. We were married on 12/9/2011 and I have only seen her a total of 32 days since we first met in June of last year. We are in the final stages of the visa process as I just sent the actual Visa application on 8/2. I guess I'm just feeling very lonely today and missing my wife terribly. I hope anyone else out there who finds themselves in same circumstances that the process goes quickly and well for you. Wishing you all the best of luck. Goodnight and Good Luck.

Hey Buddy,

I felt initially the same way but trust me there are many things you can do to make things easy for you and your wife once immigration process starts. Your wife and yourself can start fruitful conversations like getting documents ready and collecting checklist for each stage of NVC, ask mock interview questions and so many other things that ease away the pain of loneliness and being far away. When the time finally arrives, you will have things ready in hand and so much of relief too.

Phones and webcams do only a little but do plan a surprise trip once every 3 months if you can financially manage. ( words of advice coming from a guy who stayed 18 days together only, after wedding) :)

Hey Joe!

I know how you feel! My fiance and I are waiting for the NOA2, which should be coming in 5 months, yesterday we passed the 5 months, but still no approval. We feel so desperate to buy a ticket just for a few days, but we also understand we need the money more than ever!

Just touching each other or smell each other is priceless.. I know how you feel! Hang on!

Hi Joe:

I also in the same boat. I returned to USA on July 28th after spending almost 6 months with my wife. Now my wife is in Malaysia and I am here. She was in USA for 12 years with student visa and did not get H1B visa. My Green Card approved in December 13th, 2011 and my wife visa was expiring and did not want to overstay. Still, I did not apply for his visa as I do not have permanent job.

Rebtel has saved my life!

You can make international calls for "free" - they give you a local number to call, and your SO a local number. So if I call from my phone in the US, and he calls from his phone in Spain, the call is free.

This explains everything.

http://www.rebtel.com/en/Services/free-international-calls/

What I like best is you don't need a smartphone to make free calls. I've been using it on my normal cell phone for years.
