It just seems like a bad recipe that others want to follow. There is a process for a reason. You were aware of the proper proceedings of how to go about it. It appears you purposely did not file that way in order to save time and money.

So, you answered to officer truthfully stating you are a spouse of a USC and you are going to live there and he just let you in? I guess I am just confused as I have never heard of anyone doing that.

But, I am not the one that is going to adjudicate the case. I have a feeling you will be in for a lengthy interview.

Thank you for voicing your concern. I guess it's something new we'll have to worry about, now. We purposely followed a process that we understand to be a completely legitimate process, on advice from someone who works at immigration. We were advised that it was unnecessary to start with a K-1 or K-3 visa because I am Canadian I enter the US legally every time I cross. We answered every question that was asked fully and truthfully when I last crossed. We have no intention of using an incorrect process, we have spent HOURS scouring the instructions related to our application.

Maybe my first mistake was posting in the wrong forum. Thanks for the heads-up. It's already filed, so we'll just have to deal with whatever happens next.

To answer your question, I received my EAD card around 20 days after my bio appointment. If I were you I would wait for the bio appointment and calculate around a month after that. Good Luck!!

Thanks, VIP1! That is helpful -- have you already applied/received a Social Security Number?

Well, actually, it is illegal to enter on a non-immigrant visa with the intent to immigrate. If this were the way to do it, there would be no K-1 or CR-1 visas available at the Canadian embassy. The law allows for adjustment from a non-immigrant visa, because in some cases it is overly bureaucratic to force someone to go home, but this situation is mostly for long overstays or people who have had a sudden change of circumstances - they find out they are pregnant or get a job offer in the US, for example. It is not meant to be an alternative to the immigration process, and as I said, using it as such is illegal. The TOS for this site prohibit advising based on any illegal process.

If you had said you planned to adjust status at the border, you would have been refused entry.

People playing semantics with immigration to cover up what is really happening.....Just because immigration didn't ask doesn't mean it is legal. There are lots of things they don't ask, especially for a Canadian crossing.

Yes, I've already been a permanent resident for over 2 years. Getting the social security card was pretty simple once you have your work permit. Just go to the Social Security office and apply for one. You should get your card within two weeks after that. It was about a 5 hour wait at the Social Security Office tho, so depending of where you live just know that it make take you a while.

You don't have to wait until you actual card arrives. I went one day after I applied for a SSN to their office and got a print out with my number, their stamp & signature on a piece of paper. Good enough if you don't wanna wait a week or so until the phisical crd arrives.

I apologize for my earlier remarks. It appears you were misinformed. I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Good luck
