Hello folks,

I am US citizen and married to Indian Citizen. I have a question which is freaking me out. Indian passport has a biographic information page and place to put a husband's name. My wife applied a passport before marriage, and it got issue two weeks after marriage. Therefor it does not have my name on it.

Does US embassy in Delhi required to have husbanded name on the passport or no? Should my wife put my name on the passport?

I sent NVC my wife passport copy, which does not have my name but if my wife does go to passport office, and they happen to issue new one because of my name update, then does it create any issue to Delhi embassy.

If anybody has same situation, please help ASAP.

Thanks in advance.

Idont think that is an issue you should be ok but if they say something about your name on passport tell them it was issued before marrige but dont waste your time and money trying to get new passport when you dont have to.

If you get a re-issued passport, it wont be any issue, because she will have old and new passport in hand to present at the time of interview. I would say, better to get name updated! Of course, it is not a big deal, but it really depend up to embassy how they treat your case. As far as, cost-wise, it is not expensive! Even she applied under Tatkal re-issued, it would cost Rs 2500 INR ( which is appox $50 USD ). Taktal will take up to 3 days.

Addition to this...... your new passport will also have old passport number mentioned as previous passport number. So there cannot be any conflict. I think you should update your passport.

Thanks Everybody for your replies...

Quick FYI-Punjab govt passport offices are full of crooks..There is no such thing 3 days unless you pay somebody and still there is no guarantee. I do not want to go through new passport issue hassle because it seems impossible there. Just to get my wife PCC it took 2 weeks after going through back and fourth at the office numerous time. Very rude and Uneducated people work in passport office. God damn...I am so pisseoff.

I Checked Indian passport website so do US embassy. There is no such law to have your spouse name on the passport.

It is not about law, but what if CO require at the time of interview! of course, it is an optional, but you dont know what you can expect at the time of interview. If you dont have time to update the passport, then you can skip this option.

PSK is superfast, as their official has option to grant the passport on SPOT. If PSK is in your area, then you may check if you like.

Again Thanks for the reply.I Called VFS helpline and they said it is not required to have spouse name on the passport at all. The only thing CO would need to see is marrige certificate. AS you know you can not use passport your proof of relationship as it is not admissible Either in NVC nor US consulate.

VFS is not taking your interview....its upto CO...one of my cousin's wife was asked why you don't have your husband's name in your passport....then other cousin's wife was not ask this question from her CO...so it depends on CO.

Marriage certificate is true proof. Most important of all. But you have to prove that your relationship is true. Passport is another great way to add towards your relationship is real. In passport it does say Pati ya Patni ka naam...CO can wonder why a person won't add their spouse name, if the marriage is real. Pls don't start worrying now, as long as she has her wedding pics and other pics...like both of you with family, friends..wedding card, phone bills, email, video chatting, Facebook, if you joint bank account( optional). They might not ask for passport name thing, bec you are proving your marriage so many other ways. As long as she has this, then she should be fine, even if she doesn't have your name in her passport. But it depends on CO, they might ask and they might not ask. so remember tell her to take as much as proof she can.

Pls don't get nervous, if your relationship is real, then everything will be fine....just don't forget to take things that can prove your relationship to interview. pics, bills, chat....

lots of luck for the interview from my side :)

Exactly! VFS is not a decision maker for anyone's application. PERIOD.

Adding spouse name in passport is a PLUS point. It may or may not asked. It is all to make your case stronger. When you file I-130, then it doesnt have any written requirement about how much time USC should spend in beneficiary country to prove bonafide relationship, but longer you spend the time, then more stronger case you will have, plus it all depend up to many factors, what kind of situation one may have, and this and that.

I brought all kind of doc with me like phone bills, gift receipts, air-tickets, etc etc, but CO just asked for photos and didnt care to see anything else. That is it!

I had minor error in one of important doc, and I was concerned if it could be problem. Indian Official noticed the error, and asked me why, then she told the same to American CO and nice American CO gave exception to me for that error! He just said, that is fine! It is up to American CO, how he look for your case, and give exception for certain things.
