Hi

Im looking for advice, my wife and I are trying to bring her mother from colombia to massachusetts for medical treatment. My wife has her permanant green card and is eligibel to get her us citizenship ,but has not taken the test yet . Her mother is a retired teacher and does get pension . She has been diagnosised with cancer and her prognosis is not good . We would like to get her to boston for medical treatment and also to spend her last months with her grandchildren . What route if any can we/she persue , is there any chance for her getting any type of visa? Any good advice would be greatly appreciated .

Thanks

B2 Visa Qualifications

The U.S. consular officer decides if the applicant is eligible to enter the United States or not. The following is the qualification criteria by which the consular will grant the visitor visa.

It is a presumption that every visitor visa applicant is an intending immigrant (has an intention to stay back in the U.S. permanently). Therefore, applicants for visitor visas must overcome this presumption by demonstrating that:

  • The purpose of their trip is to enter the U.S. for business, pleasure, or medical treatment.
  • That they plan to remain for a specific and limited period.
  • Evidence of funds to cover expenses in the United States;
  • Evidence of compelling social and economic ties abroad; and
  • That they have a residence outside the U.S. as well as other binding ties which will insure their return abroad at the end of the visit.
  • Link to Visitor Visa that goes through everything I just mentioned to you

I would firstly research the cost of medical treatment, you are going to need to know that and be able to cover the costs to get a visa anyway, I think that will end the enquiry.

I was talking to an ICU Nurse a few weeks ago, $3,000 a day just for the bed, drugs and Doctor bills extra.

She first needs to prove that she has strong ties to Colombia that will guarantee her return, this can be her pension, any property deeds, bank accounts, etc. If one of the purposes for her trip is to get medical treatment the CO will most likely ask to see how she can cover that expense because they won't want her to become a public charge to the US government. So if she decides to get a tourist visa, she will need to go well prepared.
