I think the most important thing to understand is CBP can deny you entry even if you haven't done anything wrong /illegal and they have absolute "power" per se ; they don't even HAVE to tell you why you're denied.

Being argumentative could give them ammunition.

Maybe try MAN (or LHR) to PHL. I have been sent to secondary inspection every time ive been there, but the guy on the first desk at POE always seemed to be in a mood and send me there without asking anything to base a decision on. At secondary they have always shrugged it off and pretty much gone through the procedure so they dont undermine their colleagues. I have found the secondary people there most polite and level headed. It always ended up a simple case of open up my bag, ask what things were and say thats fine and close my bag and even take it down off the table for me. I was polite and answered their questions honestly and there werent any problems. They said they were going to call my husband (went off and pretended to!) and came back and said they were satisfied to admit me to the country.

It's not illegal, and from the UK it's usually hassle free to visit even when married to a USC.

I travelled about six times to the US between filing for the CR1 and getting my interview.

I always had the following with me

Return ticket

Letter from employer saying when they expected me back at work

Letter from landlady saying I had an ongoing commitment and lease

Bank and bills documents to show my continuing presence in the UK

NOA1 once we had it

History of travel to and from US showing no overstays etc over the previous 2 years (About 12 previous trips)

I always handed over my return ticket info with passport and the visa waiver green form at immigration. I had all the other evidence in a pouch ready to produce and in six different trips. I was never asked for it.

I was usually asked about my return travel plans, what I did for a job, that I was definitely not going to work during my vacation, who I was staying with (I answered "my husband", they then usually asked what his job was. And then told me to have a nice time and waved me through. Once the man didn't ask me any questions at all just told me I had a very pretty necklace on and told me to have a nice time (That was Newark)

It's not guaranteed that your experience will be completely hassle free but if you do get pulled into secondary checks then you can present your case for why you are returning and show that you are in the middle of doing the process legally and won't do anything to spoil that. Be sweet, polite and tell the truth.

Bad move. Do not do it. If you have to see each other have him come and see you. If you get a notation it is there every time you try to enter. It is not worth the trouble it can cause you. Try to use your head.
