MEMBER OF GERMAN ROWING TEAM LEAVES OLYMPIC VILLAGE OVER NEO-NAZI TIES

Nadja-Drygalla-620x348.jpg

Nadja Drygalla, a former police officer and member of the German rowing team, left the Olympic village on Friday following reports that her boyfriend is a Neo-Nazi and that she herself sympathizes with far-right extremism.

Drygalla’s boyfriend is allegedly a “leading member” of Germany’s “Rostock National Socialists,” the party named after Third Reich doctor Paul Rostock, who was charged with carrying out heinous medical experiments on concentration camp prisoners during the Holocaust. The Rostock party is represented in two state assemblies, but not in the country’s federal parliament, according to reports.

The national Olympic association’s general director, Michael Vesper, said he and German rowing officials held a meeting with Drygalla in which she “stressed credibly” that she “is committed to the values of the Olympic charter.” One of the tents in the Olympic charter states:

Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.

According to Vesper, Drygalla said she would leave the Olympic Village to avoid any “burden for the Olympic team.” The chairman of the national rowing association, Siegfried Kaidel, said it would hold further talks with Drygalla after the Olympics on “the further course of action.”

Germany’s intelligence agency describes the Rostock National Socialists as racist, anti-Semitic and inspired by the Nazis. Further, the party allegedly comprises mostly uneducated, young men and targets immigrant communities, blaming them for the country’s crime and unemployment rates.

Drygalla had already finished competing at the Games after the women’s rowing eight team, failed to make it to Thursday’s final. She left of her own accord after a 90-minute conversation German officials, according to the Associated Press. The German rowing federation released a statement saying it welcomed Drygalla’s decision and promised it would have “another conversation with Nadja Drygalla in August after the Olympic Games” in an effort to decide “how to proceed.”

International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams also clarified that Drygalla had done nothing wrong during her time at the Olympic Games, saying, “there is no issue for us regarding the rower.”

“I have seen the report. But as far as the Games are concerned, she has not done anything wrong.”

Given Germany’s tainted history where race is concerned, it perhaps doesn’t come as a shock that the rower was encouraged to leave the games so as not to draw negative attention to her team mates and country as a whole.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Nazi's are bad. You can only give people so much freedom before some nut cases ruin it for everyone.

Are nazi's alone on the list or are there more names we should be on the look out for?

It seems a bit far to blame people around a person whose ideas are objectionable.

I have a hunch all this effort to control unpopular thoughts and ideas is going to have unintended consequences.

I would much rather they leave ideas alone and control illegal actions .....

to include "inciting" illegal actions.

Good point. Ideas shouldn't be censored, but they do seem to incite illegal or radical actions in many cases. The Nazi's are just one such example. The same can also be said for some radical Muslim groups, KKK, etc.

I'm wondering if there is a double standard here.

An athlete has a neo-nazi boyfriend and it is cause for alarm why?

Because Nazi were responsible for the direct killing of millions.

What do they say to the Communist Athletes?

The Communists purged hundreds of millions and they are given medals at the Olympics.

Are any of the Muslim groups kept out? Are the Muslim athletes made to personally reassure a panel that they embrace the Principles of the Olympics as this German girl had to do?

I certainly don't want to carry water for some neo-nazi group but it seems like the standard is held to a very few people.

It looks the liberals have ruined the Olympics now also.

The crucial difference is whether those acts of genocide were and are a part of the politics called for by the ideology of the group, as opposed to the evil of a band of leaders regardless of their politics. There have been genocides by capitalist countries as well, even by the US. Does that mean capitalism and all who live under it must be excluded?

I think that there is broad consensus in Germany that someone with ties and subscribing to Neo-Nazi idiocy is not fit to represent the country in the Olympic games. That's really all that matters.

That exactly ^^

Also, who dates a Neo-Nazi? Admitting you're a Neo-Nazi is like admitting you're part of some sort of loser high school gang. There's less ridiculous ways to be a racist; associating with murder and genocide isn't a good strategy.

There is a huge difference between "ties" and "subscribing too".

My Brother or father could be a Neo-nazi for example and I am tied to them, we might live in the same house does that mean I am guilty of this too?

-In fact they did not decide she was not fit to represent the country.

Her event was over and to spare her team and distraction she willingly left early ..... or at least thats the story we are hearing.

Come on dude you are flailing on this one.

Communists were at war with several factions in their country and death in the countless millions was the end game.

Communism in the last century was a doctrine of Atheism which persecuted people of faith to death.

Cathedrals were actually converted into "learning centers" about Atheism.

Cathedrals by the thousands were razed to the ground Holy Icons and Bibles destroyed by the hundreds of millions.

We saw this doctrine of death everywhere Communism went far exceeding the Nazi Death machine.

No, it was not a few warped people with a bad interpretation of Communism... it was Communism and from reports in some places this oppression still goes on.

By your own logic, these neo-nazi might have a "peaceful version" of socialism so why hold them accountable for others who perverted it

All I am saying is they should be consistent with their mind reading (judging people by what they think rather than by actions). Why reject neo nazis if you have invited active communists... or still yet held the games in their country.

Do what ?? Your kidding right ? Stalin's genocide is somehow different from Hitlers because his was under the guise of communism instead of fascism. ? Surely you jest ?

The Olympics are supposed to be a place where all countries can put aside politics and join together as one despite their differences. Kicking someone out because someone accused her boyfriend of being a Neo-Nazi is absurd.

That is why I thought Carter was so wrong to punish our Athletes by keeping them out of the Games that were held in Russia.
