50 year cycle of violence

Circa 1870, the North fought the South in the Civil War. Half a century later, around 1920, worker unrest, racial tensions and anti-Communist sentiment caused another nationwide upsurge of violence. Then, 50 years later, the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement triggered a third peak in violent political, social and racial conflict. Fifty years after that will be 2020. If history continues to repeat itself, we can expect a violent upheaval in the United States in a few years.

Interesting theory without a lot of data, but the next 8 years should be interesting.

If true this might actually be good news, if it is on a cycle.... that means it will be a temp spike.

To be honest, this appears to be a manufactured coincidence of cycles.

Its definitely hard to compare the civil war to the late 60s/70s in terms of violence.

One statement bothered me a bit "that society will do anything to stop the violence". That has oppression written all over it.

why does that bother you? it's probably true. people wear of violence and a weary people will go to significant lengths to ensure stability. even if it means lining up the offenders against walls and taking care of business.

no one has to like it. it is what it is though.

it's definitely preferable to avoid the cycle altogether. once it starts though, it has to end.

if we all know how the story ends and we don't like the ending... is it not in our interests to burn the book before some schmuck decides to read it to us?

I'd rather have trials......with free suicide pills to the inmates who don't want the trial.

Sounds about right. In about 8 years the United States will go bankrupt; possibly cease to exist, unless something is done about the debt in the next few years.

When the debt reaches unsustainable levels (about 200% of GDP - and we're about 8 years away from that level), austerity will not be a choice but the natural consequence of imminent bankruptcy.

At that point, some states will start seceding from the union, and we may even see the beginning of a new civil war.

hopefully not.

hopefully, when states begin to secede people realize that nothing ever lasts forever and whatever comes next can still be pretty good if we let it be.
