Good day...

Which CBP forms to fill out? 3299 or the other...6059B?

Canadian moving to USA ...helpsmilie.gif

The Plan: Fly via Alaska Airlines. My goods & I

My Goods: Personal/household goods will be packed as extra baggage.

Limit: No limit to # of extra bags. The airline with try to put all your items on the same flight as you.

However, if baggage space is limited on the flight, additional items will go on the next available flight.

Which CBP forms to fill out? 3299 or the other...6059B? Both?

Confused.... I've email the CBP with this question as well. Hopefully I get an answer that's clear.

3299 is for unaccompanied articles - ie things you are shipping. You'll just need the regular form since you are traveling with your stuff.

Email response from CBP:

Thank you for contacting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) INFO Center.

When you enter the US, you will be intending to have those suitcases on the flight with you.

You will only need to fill out the CBP 6059 B.

The CBP 3299 is not necessary in this case.

Thank you again for contacting the CBP Info Center.

Sincerely,

CBP INFO Center

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

yes... it is the form that you said. good.gif

Since the CBP actually replied, I thought I'd share their response.

Thank you kindly for you message.

Flames9_RN:

yes yes... very very aware of the additional costs, rules, restrictions and regulations for baggage from the airline site.

It'd be nice if K1-Visa holders didn't have to pay....lol....

I'm moving to Hawaii, and it's the most economical way to move my things. Trust me too, I've done the research.

Thank you for your reply & best wishes to you

Happy Journeys !!

Thank you very much! That is what I had been wondering about as well (we're still waiting for NOA2, but no harm in planning ahead ;)). Just wondering how on earth I am supposed to put a list of all of my moving goods into that small section on the backside of the form... Would anyone know if it is sufficient to just write something like "Household Goods - Traveling On K1 Visa"?

HK12:

Yes, no harm in planning ahead, so true & smart to do.

The CBP site regarding Form 6059 B & moving to the U.S.says: "the statement that the goods are "household effects" is not enough information. The complete inventory of imported goods will be treated as the packing list and must be provided to CBP upon request".

Sounds like an itemized list is what they're after. (Example: Kitchenware, Cd's, books, photos, etc... ) There's a thread out there... I've seen it..

See CBP link for more details-----> U.S. Customs & Border Protection: Moving to the U.S.

When in doubt... email them yes.gif if you do... please share the reply good.gif

Cheers and wishing you a speedy NOA2

I called the CBP supervisor at the Houston airport and asked basically the same question. There were 2 of us and 6 bags of mostly my fiances items---we each checked 3 bags. The officer told me just fill out one form (like families do)and write household goods and no valuation. If you bring any new items like gifts or something you bought at duty free, then those would be listed.

You would get a better answer by calling CBP at the airport where you will land and asking what they expect. Here's the list of phone numbers http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/cbp_psml.xml

Thanks for your post Nich-Nick.... helped me find out more CBP info

*For Pre-Clearance Airport Locations (Canada, Caribbean & Ireland) see link: CBP: Pre-Clearance Airport Locations *

Example: In Vancouver, YVR is a pre-clearance airport for most airlines flying to the United States. This means you will clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (US CBP) before leaving Vancouver, eliminating the need to do so when you arrive at your destination.

Nich-Nick:

Followed your advice & called up the CBP at the POE I'm using (Vancouver/YVR pre-clearance CBP: 604-278-3360)

Funny... the CBP officer at YVR said, "Well, you'll be entering on a K1-Visa, so we get that you're moving. Just follow the instructions on the form (6059B), write 'personal affects', no value, and if they have value write it...."

WOW... so different from what the CBP site says...lol...

I'm making a list for myself anyway, so I know what I've packed blush.gif not sure how many boxes or bags...uggg.

Don't have a date yet whistling.gif... so not rushing, yet...

Cheers & Happy Journeys!
