hey

How re u all

thx a lot about your forum and its great advantages

I am syrian , born and raised in Kuwait.

this year , before 1 month, I graduated from high school

I will enter a medical school

but I would like to take the green card in order to facilitate the residency procedures when I finish the college

I mean after 7 years

so << I heard that If I took the green card, I shouldn't travel more than 6 months outside the US

So << as I am studying I can do this

but how long the period that I should stay in the US every 6 months ?

Also < I heard that after 5 years I can get the US citizenship , but after 5 years of taking the green card

or after 5 years of being inside the US

So , do you advise me to apply for the green card in this year as I am in the first year of medical school

or I should wait till the second or the third year

thanks a lot in advance

You need to spend more than half your time (ie more than 6 months) of every rolling year inside the USA to be sure to keep your greencard. If you are studying, they will probably give you a re-entry permit, which allows you two years abroad. However, if your schooling lasts 7 years, and you are unwilling to give it up to move to the USA, I would not yet apply.

If you get a green card through any other means than by marrying a US citizen, you need to be a permanent resident for 5 years before you would be eligible for citizenship. There are also requirements as to how much time out of that 5 years you have to spend physically within the US to be eligible to apply for citizenship. If you would be spending considerable periods abroad, chances are that would delay your citizenship process.

However, I think you may be jumping the gun here a bit - it seems to me you do not currently have a green card, and you plan to apply for it through the diversity lottery. Citizenship is a long way from where you are right now - I would focus on getting the green card first, and then worry about citizenship.

The diversity visa is a contest, you and millions of other enter a drawing and only a small number get a chance to apply. The odds are very low of getting a green card through this path. Your educational requirements seem strong but the trick is getting drawn during any lottery. Some people have played for decades with no luck.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

thx a lot for your reply

diversity visa

You realize it is a lottery ? People participate for years and do not win. Also, not sure if you are in US, but an overstay will make ineligible for green card based on diversity visa.
