SSN with no Greencard

So greencard was ordered yesterday and can take up to 30 days, but my husband has to start school so we have to open bank accounts, get mobile phones etc. You cannot do any of this online (he's going to another state where there are different banks) without a SSN. I called USCIS and SSN and it was like they had never heard of the CR1 process. I said that all he got at POE was an entrance stamp saying CR1 and NOTHING else. So can't we go with that stamp, his visa that says CR1 as well, and marriage license as well as the welcome letter (797) that came in to the SS office and get him an SS number??

4/30/2014 - THREE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!

5/08/2014 - Check cashed

5/09/2014 - NO1 (One Year Extension Letter) Received

5/15/2014 - Bio letter received

6/05/2014 - Bio appointment date - COMPLETED

11/14/2014 - RFE Received

01/09/2015 - Response to RFE with 70 pages of proof :)

01/26/2015 - APPROVED FINALLY!!!!

02/11/2015 - 10 Year Card IN HAND! Woohoooooooooooooooooooooooo

You should be able to apply for a SSN with his approval for a CR1 even if he opted to have it done automatically as part of the CR1. Take his docs to the SSA office and make sure he is in their system.

10-14 BUSINESS days after POE and still no SSN-----take your Passport and birth cert and head to ur local SSN office and ask about the status of the SSN?? Most likely they will say to re-apply again!! So if ur on the ball--prior to going to the office, download a new application, and fill it out!! So when they say you have to re-apply--VIOLA---Hand them the already filled out form and ur ID with be the Passport and birth cert!! http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/

The stamp on ur passport when you POE'd--acts as ur greencard--its good for up to one year!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.
