Tax document question

Hi,

I am in the process of completing my n-400 application. I am reviewing the document checklist (form M-477), which states tax returns as part of the required documents. It does appear to give option of just "tax returns" (with other documents such as leases, mortgages, children's birth certificates) OR "IRS certified copies of tax returns for the past 3 years" OR "IRS tax transcripts for the last 3 years".

My question is what do people usually send: would just a of first page of 1040 form bearing both applicant and spouse name would be enough provided other documents are sent or do official / certified copies needed?

Thanks.

You can go to the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=232168,00.html and order transcripts. They're free and they arrive in 5-10 days.

I'm applying based on 5 years so I may or may not need them, but I ordered them anyway (in case I get a yellow letter requesting them).

OR you can go to your local IRS office and they can give them to you there. Those should meet the requirements for the N-400.
