AOS I-797 NOA approval adequate to get SSN updated?

Thanks for the replies on my previous question.

So I'm wondering, do I have to wait the three weeks to receive my card in the mail, or can I go to the Social Security office with my NOA and get my SSN card updated? By updated I mean to reflect my married name (they said they couldn't do the name change until I received my EAD) and also will they remove the notation about valid for work only with DHS authorization? Or when I apply for work, I would show my SSN and my green card?

POLICY - GENERAL

Each alien lawfully admitted as a nonimmigrant should have an unexpired DHS document as evidence of his/her status. An DHS letter, receipt, copy of an application form or any document not listed in this subchapter is not acceptable evidence of alien status in lieu of the appropriate DHS document.

B. POLICY - FORM OF EVIDENCE

Evidence must be:

The original document, or a copy certified by the issuing agency or custodian of the original record.

Uncertified photocopies and notarized copies are not acceptable.

A receipt from DHS showing the alien applied for the document is also not acceptable. The applicant must present the actual document.

To apply for a corrected SSN card to update the SSN record when there has been a name change due to marriage only the marriage document (foreign or domestic) is needed if it meets the following criteria:

-- The new name can be derived from the marriage document, i.e. bride takes the groom's last name, groom takes bride's last name, compound name (with or without hyphen) of each spouse's original name for either or both parties.

Note: State law must also allow the type of name change wishing to be made

-- The marriage occurred within the past two years

-- The marriage document shows sufficient identifying information, e.g., biographical data such as age, date of birth or parent's names, and

-- The identifying information matches the information on his/her current Social Security number record.

The applicant will need to submit an identity document in the old name along with the marriage document if:

-- The marriage occurred within the last two years and has biographical information, e.g., age, date of birth or parent's names which does not match our records, e.g., the SSN record.

-- The marriage occurred within the last two years, but does not show biographical information, or

-- The marriage occurred over two years ago (with or without biographical information.)

The identity document used to establish the old name must match the name on the current SSN record. The identity document is acceptable even if over two years old or expired.

When issuing immigration documents, the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security issue them in the person’s legal name. The legal name is also generally the name in which the foreign passport was issued.

When an alien applies for an SSN card, SSA presumes the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change (e.g., marriage) that occurred after the immigration document was issued.

This is in addition to proof of current lawful employment authorized status.

When an individual was previously issued an SSN card with “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS (or DHS) AUTHORIZATION” printed on it and has been granted permanent residency, he or she can apply for a replacement SSN card that reflects the new immigration status.

An alien granted permanent residency status is eligible to be issued an unrestricted SSN card and will retain the originally assigned SSN.

An alien applying for a work-authorized replacement SSN card must present evidence to establish identity and employment authorization.

When requesting an SSN card, the documents presented, as evidence must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. SSA will not accept uncertified or notarized photocopies as evidence.

The documents acceptable as evidence of identity are based on three factors: (1) the applicant’s age, (2) the applicant’s citizenship/alien status, and (3) the relative probative value of documents.

A conditional I-551 is identified by an expiration date 2 years later than the admittance/adjudication date is acceptable proof of permanent residency.

Temporary evidence of immigrant status is issued for an alien to use until the permanent I-551 card is received. This may be a stamp in the individual's passport or on the I-94.

Normally, an SSN card should be received in the mail within two weeks after the application and document(s) have been received and verified.

However, when an alien requests an original SSN or replacement SSN card, SSA will verify his or her documents and current status with the appropriate Bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. If verification is not available through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system, SSA will send Form G-845 for manual verification.

All cards are mailed from Social Security Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland to the postal address provided on the Form SS-5.

I'm looking for the same thing and - wow this is a lot of information! I read thru but still not sure quite how to update my SS card from Not valid for employment to Valid.. Is form 797 enough or do we need to wait for the actual "green" card? would be nice to hear from someone who had their card changed..
