Because they pay them well below minimum wage and get to deduct room & board as well. Probably tax credits too.

Win/win.

And you know this how?

It's hard for me to imagine someone who can afford an expensive sport like skiing would settle for working for less than minimum wage. Pretty hard to afford skis on less than minimum wage.

The days of the company town are long over. Hard to imagine a ski resort paying its instructor less than $8.25 an hour in California.

The vast majority of ski town employees are not ski instructors.

I will find out however what the going rate is.

A friend of mine bummed around 20 years ago earning $15 an hour for cleaning chalets. Now the rate is minimum or less if you habla espanol.

Thank you for all the responses guys! :)

What I'm really planning is going back to the States for a year, would that qualify for an H2B working as a night housekeeper? I've worked with the employer before but on a J-1 visa and he said that he would be glad to give me my job if/when I come back.

I swear a lot of these things just seem to be complicated for no reason! So what you're telling me is that it's impossible to go back to the States and work there as a night housekeeper/laundryman because it's ''unskilled''? Every job requires a certain amount of skill so why wouldn't this one be any different? I've worked with this employer before, he said that he'll give me the job whenever I choose to come back and I have a place to stay for the whole duration. I don't really see the problem. H1B or H2B or whatever.. Do I really have to be a biomechanical engineer to actually apply for a visa?

A job of night housekeeping would only qualify for a H2B if this job is at one of the seasonal resorts that only operates on a seasonal basis. The resort or hotel would not be advertising the job as a night housekeeper, but rather has seasonal employees to do no classified task work at minimum pay.

So would that mean that I cannot stay there for a whole year on a H2B? This is a hotel I'll be working in and they're pretty much always open and definitely not seasonal.

You have not read any of the previous answers.

You do not apply for a work visa, your EMPLOYER does.

Or more likely the Lawyer acting for the Employer.

You just attend the visa interview.

Before you become angrier for not getting the answers you want, you should look up the requirements for these visas.

Yes, you do need a degree for an H1-b visa.

Get your facts straight. Your reasoning about housekeeping being "skilled" work is irrelevant. It's what US laws define as skilled.

So which visa is your Employer applying for?

If he does not apply for any then the calculation is very very simple.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

No I'm not angry :) I just said that it was needlessly complicated. I have checked the instructions and I just wanted to get some second opinions. Nothing else. Of course I know that it's irrelevant and it's basically: ''their way or the highway''. Saying that it's unskilled like that doesn't alleviate my predicament. But at least you gave me another perspective to look at.

He quite frankly has not applied for anything yet, he's asking around and I'm trying to talk to anybody about this. I'm probably going to check out the H2B and that's that. Since I don't have a degree yet.

He does not have to ask around, just ask an Immigration Lawyer.

He is going to have to appoint one anyway to do the application.

Simply put: in a non-seasonal hotel, your employers chances of getting any visa for you are very very close to nil. There are plenty of Americans who'd take the job.
