Black pastors: Obama does not have the black vote ‘in his pocket’

Rev. William Owens, head of the Coalition of African American Pastors, said that President Obama’s support for gay marriage may cost him the election due by weakening his support among black voters.

“He has not done a smart thing and it might cost him the election,” Owens said during a press conference today at the National Press Club today. “There are more people that want marriage to be right than there are homosexuals.”

Owens, who said he supported Obama in 2008, announced that CAAP is launching a “Mandate for Marriage” campaign around the country to urge black voters to withhold their support from Obama unless he retracts his support for gay marriage.

Owens said that supporters of traditional marriage, not gay marriage, face discrimination. “Some people are saying because of the position that Chick-Fil-A has taken that they don’t want them in their city,” Owens noted. “It’s a disgrace. It’s the same thing that happened when I was marching for civil rights — when they didn’t want a black in their restaurant, they didn’t want us staying in their hotels. Now they’re saying, because we take a Christian position, they don’t want us in their cities.”

He accused Obama of supporting gay marriage in order to gain campaign contributions. “For the president to bow to the money, as Judas did for Jesus Christ, is a disgrace and a shame,” Owens said.

Obama has ignored the black community, Owens also said, citing the president’s absence at the NAACP convention and other events.

“The president has ignored the black community because he feels he has us in his pocket,” Owens said. “Well, we’re not in his pocket, and [just] because he’s black we refuse give him a pass.”

The good pastor is in some fix. What is he gonna do? Support Romney who will support gay marriage as soon as he finds out that a majority of Americans support them? Good Luck with that!

They probably would shy from Romney considering the record of the Mormom church has with discrimination against blacks.

Who else are they going to vote for?

Perhaps they will not vote. The Mormon church has not had a very good record when it comes to blacks and I am sure that hasn't gone unnoticed by the good pastors. Out of the fire and into the frying pan... rofl.gif

Religious "leader" says supporting gays is a bad idea. *yawn*

Religion brings out the stupid in people. There's nothing new here.

Never underestimate the power of superstition... rofl.gif

I think it has more to do with government hand-outs. Republicans want them all to stop having babies, get an education, and get a real job. The Democrats want to pay them for having babies, send their kids to substandard public schools. and live in crappy government housing while eating free Tyson's chicken sitting on the couch getting fat.

By all means. That definitely settles it then. They should vote republican along with all the blacks that benefitted from the education and real jobs they garnered during the last republican administration. rofl.gifrofl.gif

The kid seems proud to have learned the president had finally learned how to sign his own name. Rumors have it that W even learned how to read after that pix was taken.

That would provide an answer to the thousand-years old question: Is our childrens learning ??? rofl.gif

That is good news for all who believe that blacks voted for Obama for simple racial reasons. It should silence the fringes once and for all.

What do you mean "believe" Blacks voted for him because of his race?

They voted 24 to 1 .. which was ten times the ratio of any other segment.

He and hillary had mirror views during the primaries, for what reason did they surge for him and dump her...if not for "he is one of us"?

Not that I blame them.... it's quite normal for people to vote for people they relate to of feel some connection with.

What does seem odd is despite the punishment the Obama economy has meant for Blacks, they still give him high marks in the job approval category, I think it;'s like up at 80% where the country as a whole is like 30%.

Since you know so much about it why don't you tell us what the Mormon church's position is on Blacks.

Or maybe you are just rehashing history?

Always trying to tear the country apart.
