Hello Everyone!

My EAD is due in Sept 2012. I would really like some help in how to start job hunt here in DC. I don't drive and really struggling to make friends here. Sometimes its so tough to keep it calm when you feel totally dependent and lonely :( :( :(

I have a masters in International HRM and over 5 yrs of experience in consultancy, customer service and HR. I would really appreciate if anyone who works in HR or could recommend me some agencies to get in touch please. I have been able to find nanny jobs/ dog walker however I am not at all comfortable working until I get my EAD.

any help will be great.

Thanks

I lived in the DC area for several years, so I can provide some additional info, but would need more details on where you are in the area. Feel free to PM me if preferred.

Hi J&P. I don't have any insight into the HR field specifically, but I hope you find something in your field soon after getting your EAD.

I just wanted to suggest that once you do get your EAD and can start working, you should consider bartending while waiting for the right thing to come around. That is if you have any interest or aptitude for it. You could probably walk into any genuine English bar in the area and get hired on the spot, at least if they're anything like the Irish bars. My husband walked into an Irish bar as soon as he got his EAD and was taken on immediately. It's not his dream job, obviously, but he has made VERY good money there. He too was going crazy not working, and it was big for him to get working again and start contributing. He also has more friends in the area than I do now, due to working there.

Good luck!

I'm the USC petitioner.

Thank you Slangofoil!! My hubby is not willing to let me work as a waitress/ target   not in a bad way but he insist to aim higher!

I am focusing more on temp agencies, networking and admin jobs. Once again thanks for your advice.

On networking, be sure to check out DC Web Women: http://dcwebwomen.org/

While it is primarily for women working on tech fields, it would be a great way to get to know people and perhaps they can help you get a sense of any HR-related openings within their companies. I've made some really great friends through that organization that I am still in contact with despite living on the other side of the country.

I completely forgot to mention this group to you earlier, which is a :bonk: on my part since I was a co-chair of one of its committees and super-active in the org when I lived in the area.

Hi J&P,

I just saw this thread and I live pretty close to you in Woodley Park! I don't think I can really help you out in finding a job other than just tell you to be persistent and keep checking on Craigslist. That's how I found mine and will be starting within the next couple of weeks! However, if you want some company, PM me and we could go and have a drink or something! I don't really know a whole lot of people here yet either and am anxious to make new friends!
