I just wanted to show you how wide the disparity really was. It's 10% in Mississippi, one of the poorest states in the Union.

Thank God it's not 10% in New York or New Jersey yet, but that's where we're headed, no doubt.

I'd end up renting if my taxes went up to 30K/year :(

What would you estimate the 'real' median rate is as a percentage of purchase price?

Probably around 2-3%.

ETA: Maybe lower since the real estate crash. Many homes are now selling well below the purchase price, if you bought them initially in decade or so before the crash.

The problem with NJ is everything is expensive and every time you turn around they are raising the fees.

Seems like there was one area that was reasonable but I can't recall what it was.

So a little higher than Jersey. Which would put Cali back at #1 where it rightfully belongs

Insurance for one, Driver license, fishing license. Registration.

A building permit is unreal.

You get a 50. ticket and the court costs were like 4 times that.

What is the cost for inspection there? Oddly they have their own inspection stations run by the state.

Wow! Texas is up their with N.J. That kinda jives with what my Texas friends have been telling me.

Except the home values in TX are way lower so the actual dollar amounts you pay in taxes are less on a comparable property.

Of course, people who move to TX from NJ don't buy comparable properties... they upgrade. They upgrade BIG. And end up paying what they paid here plus higher A/C costs but they have a huge kitchen no one wants to cook in.

Inspection is free if you go to a state run inspection station.

Okay, that was the one advantage!

Here it's like 20 bucks and if your windows are tinted they get you for a "test" feee to check the darkness.

Also here you pay property tax on vehicles which I don't think NJ does?

Correct, no property tax on cars or toasters.
