While waiting for NVC to assign us a case number there's something I'm wondering about the choice of agent thing.

Is it necessary to have an agent? Can't the beneficiary be their own agent?

It's necessary to fill out the form. If NVC doesn't receive the form, they won't invoice your IV bill.

But yes, the beneficiary can be the agent. In the end, if both email addresses are given to an operator, it doesn't matter whatsoever who is selected as agent as both parties will receive correspondence by email. Most people select the petitioner (who's usually present in the US) because before when NVC used to mail correspondence, it'd be faster to receive it in the US instead of a foreign country.

So if we gave the NVC our email addreses and we will both receive correspondence by email, what is the advantage of making the petitioner living the the USA the agent?

Is this true? thanks.

Quote: What's the advantages of having an agent?

The advantage is that then NVC has ONE person as a contact, who is responsible for sending in the required paperwork and correspondence. I'm sure it's less confusing for NVC that way.

Quote: Why is an agent even needed. Doesn't NVC send packages to both petitioner and beneficiary anyways?

I don't think so. I think NVC only sends things to the agent. That's why they ask you to pick an agent, so only ONE person is involved with NVC.

There is no advantage. The beneficiary can pick whoever they want. I selected my husband (the USC) as agent, but I was the one that sent the two packages. We also both received correspondence by email.

There's no need to look into the form that hard. It's just something that NVC requires so they can invoice the IV bill.

so if we do not send an email for choice of agent, does the NVC end up sending by regular mail, the "choice of agent form" to the beneficiary?

Whether or not NVC emails you correspondence or snail mails it has nothing to do with the DS-3032. It's dependent upon whether or not they've received email addresses from either the petitioner or beneficiary after a case number was assigned.

No email addresses given = snail mail correspondence

Email addresses given = email correspondence

NVC handles document intake for the immigrant visa application, the IV Unit in Manila DOES NOT.

So, everything that's submitted into NVC, is attached to the casefile, and the casefile travels from NVC into the IV Unit in Manila.

That's it, full stop. No need to have a 2nd set of original civil documents to give over to the IV Unit in Manila.

However, even with that said, sometimes things get lost between NVC and the IV Unit in Manila. It's exceptionally rare, but it happens. The only reason to have a 2nd set of original civil documents is to have them ready on interview, just in case the documents were, indeed, lost.

Yay Saylin !

One big point, though - for this person -

remember - is best (for speed at NVC) for the USCitizen Petitioner to CALL IN to NVC on a regular basis, and inquire about the casefile. When/IF a embassy casefile number is assigned, the SERCO contractor will say so, and give it to the person using the telephone. It's AT THAT POINT, that the USCitizen Petitioner gives over the email addresses on the petitioner and the beneficiary.

Giving over the email addresses is important, at this first bit, 'cause it will cause the AOS FEE BILL to arrive in the USCitizen's email INBOX. Having that AOS FEE BILL via EMAIL is mondo important.

Good Luck !

Shockingly, I received my NVC case number without ever having to call them. At any rate, I paid the AOS fee today and my wife will send the 3230 email within the next few days (as soon as confirmation of the payment is shown on the payment portal). Now we just have to continue getting all the paperwork together for the NVC packet. I'm really hoping we can get to the States in October!

At any rate, it's good to be making progress!

Are you one of them there 'emailers' ???

Also, there's been reports of folk who filed the G-1135 actually getting the NVC Casefile # without ever having contacted NVC. IMO, it's a sure sign that the right 'data entry person' was working that day at NVC, could read stuff, and read stuff well.
