So I'm POEing this Thursday. Driving through Sumas K1 & K2 visa. Just want to double check anything required before I pack up my computer and printer.

I have the obvious, sealed envelopes, passports with visa's, Hs7 for car, the moving co. has what they need I think. Anyone have a summary of the must have's or dont's etc.? Much appreciated and a big shout out to all of you for being around and sharing all the info that got me to this point! Couldn't have done it without this forum :)

When you pull up tell them you're activating your K1 visa, show them the packet.

As far as I know, when using movers, you will need to send them a copy of your I-94 once you get into the US before they are able to bring your things in. Also you should have filled out a customs form, although I'm sure you probably know that already. Make sure your things arrive after you do.

That's about it. It's pretty straightforward. Good luck, and congratulations!

They won't recognize the phrase "activating my visa". It will momentarily confuse them. Say instead that you want to enter the US with your visa.

Also, it can be a good idea to call ahead a day or two in advance to tell them you're coming in with a K-1 visa. You may be more likely to get someone more familiar with them and things may go more smoothly than they might otherwise.

Also, know the approximate blue-book value of the car you are importing, you'll need it for the import form. If you have to guess, you may want to lowball it a little - some states use the value of the car as the basis of a 1-2% import fee when you go to register it.

There is a US$6-US$7 I-94 fee you have to pay when you drive in, but that can be paid using a Canadian credit card, so don't worry too much about that.

Check all of the information on your I-94 (which should read single-entry) before you leave the PoE. Correcting stuff on it later can be a pain in the rear.

Bring a book. Sometimes PoEing by car is done in 15 minutes, sometimes it takes over an hour, it just depends on the officers you get.

Have a vague list (Box1 - Books, Box2 - Clothes, etc) of your belongings.

They won't want to see your chest x-ray, but you should probably have it easily accessible anyways.

Good luck and Congratulations!

DON'T PANIC

Thank you for the replies. I have everything in check. Just curious though about the customs form.. I have done the 3299 for the movers, have the 2 forms for the car. Is the customs form something I do when I get there?

Hope it goes smoothly and the movers show up quick after. They said it could be 3 - 12 days! ugh.. lol

Ya u will fill out the I-94 at the POE---then fax/scan it to the movers.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I dunno - I was told to say that and they knew what I meant! Either way, identify that you are entering on a K1 visa because they will direct you to secondary inspection automatically.

I have a question about the 3299. If my petitioner is already in the US and we already have our residence there ready to go.

Can she just do the 3299 and have our stuff sent over and just have it all left in her name?

We currently have 4 Uhaul uboxes loaded and waiting to go and have to fill out the 3299 and send it back to uhaul.

Can they be sent to the US if my petitioner is already there?
