So my husband came in with me from Spain on the 19th of July. We still don't have the greencard. How long does it take? Should we wait for it before opening his bank account and getting his mobile phone? He has an orientation in Indiana, can he travel with just his visa in the passport? Also, what is the next step after her receives his greencard, can we finally exhale or is there another daunting task for us to take on?

Lastly, is there anyone we can call about the whereabouts of the greencard.

Thanks to everyone!

The actual Green Card takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks to be actually printed and mailed out to you, he must have been told by the officer at POE how long that time is at the moment.

His passport must be stamped with I-551 which is conditional Green Card for a Year… yes he can open a back account, or apply for SSN as well. Some SSN office might ask for actual GC… as lot these offices have started making the copies of all these documents.

He can travel to Indiana, with his passport that should not be problem.

You will have to file for removal of the condition which would be 90 days prior to expiry of his conditional GC.

SSN is different office and GC is different office.

SSN is handled by Social Security Administration, GC is handled by DHS. Whoever has told you 2 wks is also an estimated time, it is not the exact time.

The production of actual GC varies, I was told 4-6 wks I think mine came in 4th week.

The check box on DS-230 has worked for some ppl and some ppl never got any thing from SSA office. You may want to wait few weeks and check with them on it.

Most banks like Bank of America does not require one to have SSN to open an account.

SSN is NOT always an automatic even if u checked off the box on ds-230. They say to wait 10-14 BUSINESS days before heading down to ur local SSN office and inquiring about it. Green card can take awhile.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I got the SSN in about two weeks, but the greencard took 3 months. You don;t need the greencard, as the visa with POE stamp acts as temp greencard for a year.

Yeppers, and I think it has to be 120 days before the govt will do anything about tracking it down if it has not shown up.
