Our system doesn't cover everyone. Theirs does.

That's pretty much the biggest difference.

Prescriptions are a set fee for everyone, I think it is around £8 ($12). Contraceptives are free. Pregnant women get free dental treatment, cancer patients don't have to pay for prescriptions, I could go on.

ou can get free NHS prescriptions if, at the time the prescription is dispensed, you:

are 60 or over

are under 16

are 16-18 and in full-time education

are pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months and have a valid maternity exemption certificate (MatEx)

have a specified medical condition and have a valid medical exemption certificate (MedEx)

have a continuing physical disability that prevents you from going out without help from another person and have a valid MedEx

hold a valid war pension exemption certificate and the prescription is for your accepted disability

are an NHS inpatient

Won't the Obamacare plan take care of that?

Not at all, how could you think that?

All healthcare costs on the NHS are paid for through taxes. I still have to pay hundreds of dollars every month for my health insurance... The health care system here is terrible, the new rules make it a little easier for those in need. For example, there is no lifetime limit on insurance payments.

Well, PPACA as originally passed would have come very close.

But now that SCOTUS has cut the legs off of the Medicaid expansion (which was always going to insure a lot more people than the exchanges), not so much.. not even close.

I would much rather everyone paid for health care out of their taxes than hundreds of dollars being taken out of my paycheck. I don't see this happening in America for a very long time.

This is something that caught me by surprise when I moved here. We're planning on having kids in the next year or two, and I was used to Canadian thinking where you get a year of maternity leave. Definitely not the case here.

Should probably move back to Canada to spawn.

Dream on.

The entire speech about life being precious, and babies being angels, and the sanctity of life only apply while the baby is in the womb.

The moment you deliver that kid, you're on your own. It is your baby - deal with it. It's heartwarming, really...

Hundreds of dollars in taxes vs hundreds of dollars in pre-tax deductions... what's the difference?

I was never taxed as much as I pay for health insurance here. The government can pool all the money together and have better buying power than small insurance companies. Hospitals cannot overcharge and rip us off and in turn put up our insurance payments, etc.

not even close.

the medicare-expansion having been made optional by scotus, the states with the most uninsured (republican states, mostly) are going to be opting out.

Won't everyone have the opportunity to have health insurance under the Obamacare plan?

And yet, ours cost nearly twice as much as theirs. That's another main difference.

My initial question of what makes American healthcare inferior was aimed more at the level of care one receives, not so much the cost. I'm curious as to why so many people state that the American healthcare system is terrible. I think it's great in regards to the level of care one receives. Just because it's not "free" doesn't make it terrible.

Well, how much you pay in taxes depends on how much you make.

How much you pay in health insurance does not.

Until 2014 when the elements of ACA tying premium subsidies to income kick in.

Is the time off paid? Do men get paternity leave too?

I should have moved back to the UK and saved myself a lot of money.
