No, but there would be additional bureaucracy involved. I do remember the two weeks my daughter was in NICU and that was the absolute last thing I needed.. more forms to fill. The nurses had their problems but getting formula when she needed it was easy-peasy. Just how it should be.

So because you had a bad experience everyone else should be subjected to the same treatment?

Here's just one of many examples I found on the net.

Doctors see surge in newborns hooked on mothers' pain pills

Medical authorities are witnessing explosive growth in the number of newborn babies hooked on prescription painkillers, innocent victims of their mothers' addictions

The trend reflects how deeply rooted abuse of powerful narcotics, such as OxyContin and Vicodin, has become. Prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest-growing drug problem, classified as an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Had you read the article you would have noticed that the exposure discussed here happens pre-birth - i.e. not from breastfeeding.

Generally speaking, breastfeeding is probably one of the best thing a mother can do for the health of her child.

Yes it is extremely beneficial.

Known as liquid gold, colostrum (coh-LOSS-trum) is the thick yellow first breast milk that you make during pregnancy and just after birth. This milk is very rich in nutrients and antibodies to protect your baby ....

That's why WIC will give you a breast pump if you are returning to work... Anyone who doesn't qualify for WIC can buy their own.

There wouldn't be much, or any paperwork for most, as women would be breastfeeding. Less women and children would suffer illnesses related to formula feeding. The benefits far outweigh your complaint about signing out formula. The government is predicting 226,870 new cases in women for breast cancer this year, and 39,510 deaths. Link

Formula is thrown at women at every stage of pregnancy, formula companies send you boxes of it, doctors give out leaflets and coupons for it. The hospital will use it too. This needs to stop.

Why does it need to stop? Women can't make up their own minds about anything, much less about something as important as their baby's first nourishment, without falling prey to heavy advertising? That's ridiculous. Women who want to breast feed will breast feed. Those who don't, won't. No matter where there's formula present. I nursed for over two years, surrounded by the stuff. Should it be kept under a black curtain at the grocery store too, just in case a lactating woman should stumble across it and not be able to resist the urge?

Not everyone qualifies for WIC. And for those that do, and rent a WIC pump, there are also many insurmountable problems breast feeding women run into with pumping at work. Not everyone lives in a state that requires their employer to give them pumping time. Or works at a place of employment large enough to be required to accommodate that breast feeding employee. Pumping, even under the absolute best circumstances, is a poor substitute for a baby at stimulating further milk production. Many of those women will experience supply issues. They won't find it very cost effective to be taking non-paid breaks at work so they can pump a couple oz of milk that doesn't even cover an entire feeding.

This has just been part of my experience with patients. I meet new moms @ their newborn's exams, and probably 80 % of them are breast feeding.(my state of Oregon has an initiation rate of 90% in fact. no one has to sign out formula on the ob ward here though.) When I'm meeting with these same moms and babies at their 2 month check ups, that number dips down to about 30%. Something is happening in that interim, and it's got nothing to do with free formula. There's not enough available lactation support to the majority of women, and hospital formula restrictions don't fix that. It's like trying to find an easy solution to part of the problem but ignoring where the problem really exists. Pointless.

I agree with this part, there isn't enough support. Support in general for pregnant women is terrible in America, the government needs to do more to address this problem.

I hear ya, it just seems odd to me that the same Government powerbroker that is so concerned about the "health of babies" also provides funding to kill the same baby should the mother "choose" not to have it.

I guess all that Pro-choice talk ends after the baby is born... as the mother might choose to NOT breast feed and we can't have that you know.
